annoying things people do in fandom

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
someone keeps tagging all my posts for this one rare pair with 'no one ships this because they're badly written women'

yeah, i didn't ask and when has that ever stopped anyone? and can you stop tagging all my artwork with that. i only get like 4 likes, i want to know it's getting reblogged for the art and not your stupid rant

Ugh, people like that are the worst. Why is it so hard to let someone ship something or whatever and have fun without some "btw , I think this is shitty and I just had to let you know."

I get annoyed when people confuse headcanon with canon and then get annoyed when people disagree with their headcanons. It can be pretty pervasive in my current OTP because there is very little canon to work with. It seems that every few months we get someone who thinks the fandom is glorifying an abusive relationship or that people who don't see it as abusive aren't reading canon properly.

My main issue right now is betas apparently aren't a thing anymore. I've all but quit reading fanfic because of glaring spelling and continuity errors in supposedly beta'd fics.

I've found it hard to actually find betas, both because my fandom is small and because it is harder to find betas for PWPs.

I always read over multiple times and do my best to find errors. And as soon as I see something or someone points it out I fix it. But I haven't been able to find a beta, which I know would be a lot better.

Same.

I have a nearly 20k fanfiction i'm writing and feel it's a little monotonous - i would love for someone to read the material and offer feedback, but the fandom is not that big.

AYRT

If the author makes the effort to edit their own story, that's fine, and very appreciated. I'm not nitpicking about a few common typos or anything. I'm talking wrong character names, and one memorable incident where an amputated limb switched from right side to left side.

Oh, yes, that level of error is annoying. I don't mind small mistakes, but when you are misspelling characters names and getting big details wrong I tend to backbutton out.

It seems like that's one of those things that comes and goes and varies depending on fandom.

I think part of the problem is that people just don't know HOW to beta. They think they know... but they don't.

My problem is this one fan in my fandom who whines about how nobody ships her rare pair of two badly written women. (I'm not implying you're her, but your comment made me think of her.) She thinks the only reason the whole fandom doesn't love it is because they're too busy fapping to the juggernaut slash ship, and if they weren't such raging misogynists they'd see how practically canon her ship is.

The reality is that both characters are pretty minor, while they're supposedly friends they're never shown interacting, and one of them spends almost all of her screen time dropping hints about her crush on the male main character. This fan of the pairing is the pinnacle of everything I hate about femslash and female character stans. They'll stretch as far as they can to prove that anyone not liking their flawless ladies is because misogyny and most other fans buy it. If you don't, that just proves their point about misogyny!

There was a person in one of my fandoms a while back who was sending asks to everyone who had ever so much as mentioned a particular pairing, demanding that they justify their shipping preferences. It was both very funny (especially when they'd alight on someone who hadn't participated in that particular fandom at all in several months) and very irritating.

Generally speaking, I find it very annoying when people take shipping too seriously.

if someone kept doing that on my art I'd confront them about it tbh, that's rude as shit

Find out who did it. Reblog their art with #yourartsucks #mayyourshipssink

Let us know what happens!

I don't understand why people even go to the trouble to reblog something that they don't like. Like, I'll see art of my nOTP, but I sure as hell don't want that on my blog.

I think for me right now, there's one particular person who used to be in my fandom that tries to rile everyone up by posting about how 'problematic' the big ship is now. But they go and find the most asinine things to complain about the ship. It's absurd. They used to be a big fan of the ship too, but then they fell down the SJW rabbit hole.

Geez, that's some assholeish behavior.
