21. Maybe you should call her 'Ente' then?

[identity profile] serika-san.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
.....You win. XD

I don't get the name debate at all. Neither is right or wrong and anyone who bothers to try to argue that one is "the" name is too elitest for me to bother listening to. >>;

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh, Manda, you know me better than that. XD;; I'm not saying people CAN'T use Ahiru, I'm just saying I"m TIRED of people saying I'm/ADV's wrong for using "Duck".

Although, as I told the other commenter below...I actually almost did use Ente for fanfics/RP/etc. XD It actually would've made more sense for me to use that instead of Ahiru for Poly, since I'm clearly making her German...but oh well, such is life.

[identity profile] sword-and-quill.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
My point being: IT DOESN'T MATTER. XD;;; I don't hear ANY name debates, aside form the wankfest this secret caused.

Honestly, people aren't going to pay that close attention to CARE about little details like that. XD; It's really pointless and nit-picky to worry about something so trivial.

[identity profile] freakyfanboy.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
XD; See, I've actually seen fans use it as an excuse to NOT BUY THE DVDS. Because the translation is "wrong". That's why I get my panties in a bunch, although admittedly I do get crazy sometimes. XD;

XD; But I care! I'm nit-picky when it comes to my writing! It's not like I'm going to change her name or anything, though, everyone knows her as Ahiru now.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't, because if Itoh-san wanted her to be Ente, she'd call her Ente (like Kraehe and Autor and all of the other German names in the show XD). Otherwise it ruins the puns.

(Although, honestly? I HAVE been tempted to call her Ente in fanfic before, but then I realized...it's not the original intent. Duck/Ahiru is closer to the original intent.)

I'm not saying you CAN'T call her Ahiru, I just get frustrated when fans say "ADV translated it wrong!" or tell me I'M calling her by the wrong name. That's what I'm complaining about.

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I can see, Ito didn't call her 'Duck' either.

And I didn't think you're telling people what to call her, I just think 'It's set in Germany' is a bad argument against calling her Ahiru.

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not in the fandom, but I'm reading this as the original intent being for the viewer, regardless of the language they're viewing in, to immediately associate her with the animal. So sure, Ahiru in the Japanese original, but in other languages, it would then go to the language it's being presented in, because that's the one the viewer is going to get the joke right off the bat, no worries about translation. Where if just the German name was used, the viewer might not know the name's meaning and have that "aha!" moment.

At least, I think that's what the argument being made is. :O

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
See, I didn't see this argument made at all. I saw 'Duck is better because it's set in Germay', which doesn't make any sense to me >_

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, this is a combination of what I saw in this thread and what I've been seeing in others, since I can't resist following translation arguments. >_>

[identity profile] barteredbride.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not--she's Japanese. Ito-san calling her "Duck" would be the same as calling her "Ente"--it wrecks the puns and fairytale-style naming. (The same way the DVDs keeping 'Ahiru' would've wrecked it, too. It doesn't matter with informed fans, since the know it means duck, anyway--but not everyone who watches the DVDs know that.)

Well, see, it's a good argument for when I write fanfic, since I actually mention other German cities and even use German words in my fanfic. ^^; Using "Ahiru" wouldn't make any sense for them. I'll still read fanfic that uses 'Ahiru', if that's what the author chooses--it just wouldn't work for my writing at all.

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I know, but I was referring to the fact that [livejournal.com profile] haleysings calls her Duck and that's as little the original name as Ente is.

That's what I meant in my first comment. I don't see why Duck is better suited in this case than Ahiru.

[identity profile] quackingly.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I know, this is [livejournal.com profile] haleysings. I'm using an RP account, because I'm too lazy to sign out. XD;

Duck is better suited because I'm writing in English. Ahiru would be better suited if I was writing in Japanese.
EDIT: That's just MY preference and the way *I* write. I think it's fine for other people Ahiru if they'd like.

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Duck is better suited because I'm writing in English. Ahiru would be better suited if I was writing in Japanese.
That's completely understandable, I just got the impression, that you think Duck is more fitting, since it's set in Germany (from the phrase 'not only is it a fairytale, it appears to be set in Germany. Why should she keep the Japanese name?').

EDIT: That's just MY preference and the way *I* write. I think it's fine for other people Ahiru if they'd like.
I realize that, I'm just being a little nitpicky >.<;;

[identity profile] freakyfanboy.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think "Duck" is more fitting because I'm writing in English and it's not set in Japan. If the show was set in Japan, I'd be using "Ahiru", but since the show is set in Germany her name is being 'translated' for the Japanese. Her "real" name probably is Ente, since all the characters are actually speaking German. (The same way the characters in Beauty and the Beast are really speaking French, or the Nazis in the FMA movie are really speaking German, or when I watch characters in a dub of an anime set in Japan they're still speaking Japanese, it's just being translated into English). ...If that makes sense?

It's fine, I'm being nitpicky, too.

(HaleySings again, BTW.)

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
All right, I got it (finally xD), it makes sense now. Thanks for the clarification!

[identity profile] barteredbride.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sure! <3 I'm sorry I didn't explain it very well. XD;
