How can you tell they read it in high school?

I can't tell for sure, but most people who read books regularly don't have "To Kill a Mocking Bird," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," or "Catcher in the Rye" as their favorite.

Those first two are often on my fave book lists, but my list tends to be about two dozen books when it's on the small side, so hopefully that makes up for it.

I mean, those are just genuinely good books.

Really? Your favorite book doesn't have to be the one that most intellectually challenged you. My favorite movie of all time is The Lion King because I have fond memories of it, it always makes me happy to watch it, and it defines my childhood.

I think anons' points are that people list those books because they're trying to look intellectual and deep

Someone who lists the Lion King is less likely to be trying to impress people on purpose

I didn't get that from OP. They just said people who's tastes in books has not changed in high school. And then someone (same anon?) mentioned people who list _______ as their favorite.

Which...tastes is very broad. Your tastes in books isn't really one book. That is a favorite (which can be something as silly as The Pokey Little Puppy). Tastes are things like genre, time period, author, etc.

Idk if people aren't readers it's easier to not mention a book or say they're not a reader than to reach back to grasp at whatever book they were forced to read in HS in order to be able to put down a book

But that is something than can naturally come up in conversation. You talk about stuff you like and might have in common (movies, books, television).

Like, if OP meant, "I don't like people who boast about being books snobs but only read Stephen King," I'd understand the issue.

hrmm I assumed it was them listing the books on the profile since OP mentioned the dating profiles

If they are listed as favorite books, then I don't see why that would be bad. Like, I fucking love the book Bunnicula. Nostalgic as hell about it.

Re: Dating and elitism

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Bunnicula isn't a book nearly everyone in our generation was forced to read in HS though

At least for me, it's not the perceived quality of the book, it's the lack of apparent breadth. If someone says their fave book is Bunnicula then I can assume they've read more than what their high school mandated. If their entire reading list of favorite books is off a HS curriculum then we probably won't have much to talk about. If their 4 favorite books are Catcher, Scarlet Letter, Crucible, and To Kill a Mockingbird... it's the "basic" of books

I just can't comprehend using that as a basis. But that is the point of the thread so you got me!

I can easily comprehend it if original anon is really into books. Someone who is really into music probably wouldn't be interested in someone whose favorite songs are the latest top 40s either, you know what I mean

Or if someone is an avid video gamer and someone lists their favorite video games as Candy Crush and Solitaire

It speaks to a lack of mutual interest

DA

The reading lists are fairly standard. Curveballs here and there, but if someone's favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye or Animal Farm, it's a dead giveaway.
