I know what you mean. In a way, it's comforting to have your life laid out for you with no hard choices involved. I mean, I get that the community killed babies and old people, but otherwise, life there seemed pretty nice. You're assigned a job based on your interests and abilities, assigned a spouse based on how well you'd get along, etc.

I'd like to live there if I could be the Giver.

Really though, I'm in the same boat. I have an MA in History, and my head is spinning with job hunting. I'm in this horrible in-between phase of wanting to continue on my PhD to do academia or "settling" for something now. I desperately need income, but I am just so overwhelmed with trying to look for the next steps in my life that I kind of wish someone would just tell me what I'm supposed to do.

I love this book, but the idea that everybody gets assigned jobs when they're kids scared me when I was younger. I was interested in a lot of things, but there was nothing I could do well and I always hesitated when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up because I didn't know. I knew that if I lived in that society I wouldn't be a Jonas because my eyes weren't light.

I was the same way, but the thought of someone just assigning me a job made me feel better.

*sigh* I know what you mean, fellow job-seeker.

I've felt this way before, but then I just remember that I'm kidding myself: there is no way they wouldn't have put me down in such a society.

It's funny and sad that job-seeking is such a crawl through the Slough of Despond that you start thinking things like this. I was once unemployed for over a year and I started envying indentured servants for at least being guaranteed a steady job. Stay strong, OP.

There is definitely something to be said for a benevolent dictatorship. Many people studying happiness have shown that having lots of choices doesn't necessarily mean more happiness...
Which doesn't mean that any of us would actually want to give up freedom, however.

I can understand your thoughts, OP. If only there was a way to have the good things from such a society without the bad mind-controlly aspects of dictatorships.

There aren't really any good societies where people's every aspect of life is controlled. It usually ends up even worse for the regular people than a freer society where people can still get treated terribly and forgotten.

I hope you can find a good job. Also, please remember to vote this year if you're in the US. I have a feeling it could be important for the work environment.

If you think about it, traditional societies often did / do follow certain aspects of this, and not always poorly. You would likely enter the family business, whatever that might be. You would probably have your spouse picked by the community (family, matchmaker, etc.) based on your personality, etc. These systems don't necessarily fail in principle. They sometimes don't work for everyone, though, the way today's society lets many people down. All we can do is our best.

When I first read it I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal.

Eh it's not that big of a deal, luckily the fandom is so huge that there is enough for material for everyone to have fun with. I like Kylo/Rey a lot and don't ship yaoi, but I can definitely see the appeal.

I had no idea that Kylo Ren made his debut in The Giver. Learn something new every day...
