I have mixed feelings about Trish/Simpson. On the one hand, I thought it was empowering to actually see a woman enjoying sex without necessarily having the romantic angle first. Especially cunnilingus, since censors for TV and movies seem to regard that as being more x-rated for some stupid reason? (I specifically recall the fuss made over Blue Valentine, which was dumb.) I also like how Trish makes a point of cutting Simpson short and pointing out that just because they had sex didn't mean she was inviting his interference in her life. Yay!

But on the other hand, Simpson was skeevy as hell and just wasn't a smart choice for many reasons.

I headcanon that she slept with him sort of deliberately in spite of the skeeviness, *because* of him trying to kill her, as kind of a reclaim-power-feel-better thing

especially since she's pretty toppy in both scenes we have of them together, cunnilingus + later when she kept physically pushing him *down*

it wasn't a *wise* choice (even long before the pills and his creepy protectiveness/patronizing was in the picture, in that first conversation it was clear that he was more concerned with patching up his self-image as a Heroic Guy than actually respecting her - which would have entailed leaving her alone, given that she was super uncomfortable with him at first) but it's one I can understand her making in the wake of what happened, and I still think she's a great character

the thing that worries me most actually when she tried to defend his non-pill behavior everything else went down. No, trish, stop fooling yourself!!! he wasn't kilgrave but he was not a good guy either!

it doesn't ruin the character for me though, one of her strengths is having faith in people and reaching out, and sometimes that goes awry

Yes. I think a lot of people miss this point about Simpson. The attempted killing wasn't his fault, but I'm not sure it makes him a "good guy" given the way he behaved afterward. It's a pretty nuanced depiction though, so I guess that's why not everyone gets that.

at that point in the show I was willing to cut him some slack tbh

because he'd had his identity violated in a super insidious way, he's traumatized, and like - it's not like he can talk to an ACTUAL therapist, and the only other person who has any clue what's going on is Jess, who has zero interest in listening to him

but as the show went on he *consistently* valued his own perceived 'heroism' over trish's wishes and obvious growing discomfort, actually getting worse instead of better, leading to the decision to go back on the pills in the first place - yeah, he's a dude who flat out does not respect her as a person, violates hella boundaries, and the red flag was there early

She wasn't hostile to him until he started sleeping with Trish. She even invited him to the group therapy and he was the one to turn it down.
