Rest of teh movie was him doing what he basically did most of his life: piloting. His next bit of "training" was ghostly Obi-Wan telling to basically "feel, don't think."
After that? He only really got trained with Yoda. And as far as saber skills are concerned, he didn't get that with Yoda. and you can see it against Vader later on.
Rey? It's likely she was one of Luke's youngest students, whether she is related to him directly or not. Plus, having lived on Jakku since she was 5, she was either trained by who ever was taking care of her OR she picked up the staff and taught herself. With teh possibility of vague, hazy katas in the back of her mind helping her along.
As for her Force abilities? She basically did what Luke did. Went on very vague teaching/advice, and went from there.
She is hardly a master. Her first attempt was weak and reliant on her emotions and focus. Plus, she was using a weapon that most likely felt ten times different than her staff AND fighting a wounded Kylo, who looks like he hasn't much training either. At least she has the background with her staff to give her a basic sense on how to fight. But she was ultimately defending more than actually attacking.
So, tell me again how she ~magically~can do all of this? there's plenty ion the film that can back up how she did this. And much of it is the same thing that Luke did.

And as I said. Rey isn't some newbie to the whole "wielding a weapon thing." And since she knows about the Jedi, but believes them to be myth, I can see her trying to dig up what ever info she can get her hands on. She's a scavenger. she could have very well found a few things in all of the wreckage. Not enough to make things super believable, but enough to rouse interest.

I agree that her knowing more than Han about the Millenium Falcon was a bit overplayed, but the fight against Kylo was not nearly as overpowered as people like to pretend.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)Yes, because as we all know, 4 year old kids are such awesome force users and to the degree that years later when they've forgotten completely about their child hood, they're able to pull off abilites only used by knights and masters.

Kylo was trying to do that. Her will was stronger.
And she failed twice before she got her nerve up and steeled herself. And it was still wobbly.
You are trying SO HARD here. But the film has plenty on it that just completely refutes your ~mary sue~ bullshit.
And she was five, not four.

Get your head out of your ass and go back to the now dead Legends EU. And go cry over there.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-08 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)Rey, however, somehow knows more about the Millenium Falcon than Han, somehow managed to beat up 4 dudes, managed to do Jedi mind tricks right off the bat, managed to out mind-trick Kylo, managed to use the force to get the light saber to her (over an actual trained Jedi student), and then whooped Kylo's ass without any help. Luke didn't even manage to use the force properly until the third movie.

- As was mentioned earlier, she "knew more than Han" (lol) because that ship had been there for years. And she called it garbage. Which means she most likely looked it over. She'd earned some respect from Unkar Platt over the years since she was such a good scavenger, so it's not hard to believe that she may have helped look it over over the years.
- Go back to my first point. She's been on that planet since she was 5. She either learned how to defend herself or die. Not to mention the fact that she rappels up and down inside various ships for much of the day which requires good arm strength, upper body strength, agility, etc.
- *sigh* No, she didn't. She failed. Twice, before she got the hang of it. And she was still unsure of herself, hence why she was wobbly when she told him to drop the weapon. She wasn't even sure that part was gonna work. Besides, Kylo was just there trying to break into her mind, exerting his will on her. That is the basis of Force Persuasion. Most troopers are very weak minded anyway since they have been indoctrinated to follow orders since they were super young. So it wasn't even a hard nut to crack. On some on like Phasma, Kylo, or Hux? I doubt she'd have succeeded.
- Sheer force of will and righteous anger over what Kylo did to Finn. Highly emotional states can enhance people's abilities. Please look at so called "miracles" of people being able to pick up cars just enough to free someone they care about.
- She gave a lot of ground and defended more times than not. Kylo let his guard down when he was goading her and tempting her to join him. He was also heavily injured by the Bowcaster bolt. So, she took advantage. She was also already well versed in melee combat, albeit with a longer ranged melee weapon. Hence why she gave ground.
- Luke was very unsure of himself. Hence why he "failed" at lifting his X-Wing from the swamp. He didn't heed Yoda's advice. He doubted his ability because he felt the X-Wing was too heavy/too big. Yoda proved that that had no bearing on being able to use the Force to pick it up. All that mattered was will and confidence. Obviously, he had gained some kind of confidence during the interim between 5 and 6 AND built his own lightsaber by himself, and was finally able to use what he learned.
Back to Rey, mind trick. She was unsure of herself, not fully in belief just yet that she had any power, hence why she failed twice to convince that trooper to free her. Once she steeled herself, willed herself, and grew confident, she was able to do it. And since she knew of the Jedi and most likely heard of their vast abilities, she is no newbie to that. All she needs, is guidance. And Maz Kanata had already given her a little bit.
Rey being intuitive is not a Mary Sue. Many people are. The difference is that she wants to learn and has had to learn things out of pure necessity. Just like the Mind Trick. It was badly needed necessity that she didn't even believe was gonna work.
Anon, like I said. You can't win. This movie set up plenty to explain why she did what she did. And the new canon books add more.
Either pay attention to the film and also start reading or just shut the fuck up.
