This is bait, but I'll respond anyway.

First, Anakin in the first movie was 100% a Mary Sue. He's there for the express purpose of giving children someone to relate to as that was Lucas' target audience for some reason. The audience hated him though.

Anakin past the first film was not a Mary Sue. He was very skilled, yes, but at that point he'd had considerable training. Also he was really unsettling to watch and felt all around creepy. He was impulsive and whiny which are two big character flaws.

Luke sucked at everything he did and constantly had to be saved by other people. Even his final confrontation with the Emperor was a loss till Vader stepped in. His Death Star run was aided by his previously stated ability to pilot, and a decent culmination to learning the basics of the force: Get small ball into small hole. Luke is disliked by most people he meets and has character flaws.

Rey is like Anakin in the first movie. She does things effortlessly on the first try or learns at a pace far beyond anything believable. She's loved and trusted by everyone she meets, and can do things better than everyone else. The only thing that makes her worse than Anakin in Episode I is that the movie focuses on her a lot more.

Mary Sue is not a catch all for the main character. It's a moniker for character who are literally perfect and have no flaws and frequently no personality. They're pants for the viewer to put on and imagine themselves in the universe.

tl;dr Episode I Anakin and Rey are Mary Sues, Luke and Episode II & III are not.

Oh yes Luke is.

Kid, from a desert planet who has never glown an X-Wing in his life suddenly can? And he's given the leader role to fly into the canyon and destroy the Death Star? Tild to basically believe in himself?

Yeah. And he just so happens to make it? Yeah, no. That's very Mary Sue.

He's flown ships similar to the X-Wing, it's not like he's never flown anything before. He's also been training at the academy. Also, being able to achieve something at the last minute (a shot that wasn't even impossible) after having all your friends die trying to protect your worthless ass =/= Mary Sue. He also made the shot with the aid of Obi Wan.

ftr, by definition, a Mary Sue is a new character implanted into an already established canon and affecting the canon and established characters profoundly. They're better at everything than the pre-established characters (much like Rey with the Force and MF) and are automatically loved by said characters (self explanatory). That isn't Luke. Your desperate need to shit on a decent character to make your poorly written favorite seem better by comparison is just douchey.

He didn't go to the academy. His uncle wouldn't let him. And yeah, he owned a T-16 that he could train with himself. But he still hadn't flown an X-Wing. He'd have had no idea if it was profoundly different or not until he got into one. But even then, he was still the newcomer who NO ONE knew BUT Biggs. And HE was the one given command of that squadron? Puh-lease.

Oh really? Doing something that is impossible after your friends dying/get hurt protecting your "worthless ass" =/= Mary Sue? Hmmm, where did we see such a thing in The Force Awakens...? Oh, I know!! When Rey got the lightsaber after Finn took a saber strike to his spine.

Obi-Wan didn't really help him. And besides, Anakin got the same "pep talk" from Qui-Gon. And so did Rey, from Maz Kanata earlier in the film.

LOLOLOLOL. When did I ever shit on Luke? Luke is my favorite of the OT. And I LOVE how he picks things up so quick (kind of like rey!). I'm just pointing out that his sudden ability to pick shit up is the same damn thing that Rey is doing. And his ability to fly is both because of his father's talent and his "training," just like Rey with her simulator and possible family lineage. But, oh, she's just a Mary Sue. Cause, you know, she's a girl.

Luke's a Marty Stu. Get over it. A lovable one, but one nonetheless. So if you wanna call Rey one, then you need to call Luke one. Otherwise, they both aren't.

Luke's a Marty Stu

No he isn't, you delusional idiot. He's not particularly talented in the beginning beyond being a good pilot (which is explained on why that is), he gets defeated in everything he does up until ROTJ, constantly needs saving, starts off very flawed/whiny, and grows as a character. Rey, OTOH, is already very skilled and has no real character flaws at all, meaning she generally has nothing to develop, which makes her boring. Learn what the damn term means before arguing about it.

- Rey is also explained on why she's so knowledgeable on how to fix ships and fly them. Outside of that and being able to fight due to necessity? She's not either.

- Hmm, it couldn't be because he was headstrong to a fault could it? Oops!! Otherwise, no, he did just fine. And Rey had her own moments where she failed and needed saving.

She has plenty to develop. Trusting others, learning more about the galaxy at large, very naive still, but we see a crack in that by the end of the film...just like Luke did after he saw his family killed. And her over confidence in her skills can be a detriment. She accidentally let out the Rathtars because she pulled the wrong damn plug.

Sorry. They are both fallible and good at their various talents.

Both can be and cannot be Mary Sues/Marty Stus.

I'm still seeing only hate for her because of one thing. You are not convincing me otherwise, nonny.

Sit down, and shut the fuck up.

LOLOLOLOL. When did I ever shit on Luke?

When you called him a Mary Sue while vehemently arguing Rey isn't at the same time (which is hilarious considering how flawed the former is compared to the latter). lmao at you not even knowing what you're talking about or keeping your argument straight ;P

You don't get it, do you?

Luke is a Mary Sue. He basically gets handed everything he ever wants. And yes, Rey does too.

But if you MUST state that Rey is a Mary Sue, then you must state that Luke is one, also. Otherwise, they are not.

And that's not shitting on Luke. It's true.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-08 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no it really isn't. You're discounting the whole point that he was a trained pilot who tried to join the Academy.
