Food Trends that you dislike

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
What are som food trends that you dislike/hate/find disgisting? Not simply food in general that you don't like, but things that have gotten popular/are fads/trends/hip "new" things.

Bacon everything. I mean... that's an obvious one maybe.

Not so obvious: huge macrobreweries trying to make niche hipstery beverages to appeal to "the youth".

Bacon is gross. It's greasy and artery-clogging and just, ugh. Can't stand it.

I like bacon, but I don't want everything to taste like bacon, that's disgusting.

I don't understand the fascination with bacon either.

I'll eat birds all day long, and I don't mind a bit of beef, but I've never liked pork. Bacon is basically flypaper to me.

I like bacon and even indulged in some smoked bacon chipotle salt, but I have no idea why it became a pop culture thing. Why are there bacon plushies? Bacon soap? Bacon anything that's not edible?

The whole kale thing. Yes, even kale chips, which are nowhere near as orgasmically delicoius as food bloggers would have you believe.

Green smoothies, because I cannot fathom how people could puree raw spinach and claim you can't taste it, because I love spinach (just not raw!) and even I want to gag a little at the thought.

Making stuff into "sliders". It's just a tiny burger, you guys.

I love spinach (raw and all!) and I don't get why people eat things if they don't want to taste them. What's even the point of that?

Ugh, kale. My health-conscious friend swears kale is the best thing ever and went through a phase where she only cooked things with kale, made kale smoothies, and served kale chips. I felt so rude turning everything down when I went to her house because I hate kale so, so much.

I love green smoothies because I love the taste of raw spinach, it confuses me that people would claim you can't taste it?

I think it's mostly baby spinach that people add to smoothies, which they can get away with because baby spinach is so deficient in actual spinach flavor.

This is already an older thing by now, but I hate the chillies and chocolate combination. I think it's incredibly disgusting.

Also: vanilla in savoury dishes. Not a fan at all.

Gluten free. I can't stand the taste of most of the non-gluten bread substitute things and I can't imagine why someone would choose to eat them if they didn't have to. My sister has Celiac, so we actually had to eat them sometimes so there wasn't any cross contamination. And every single on of them I hated. Why would you choose to eat that way?

Cupcakes. So over it, man. "Cupcakeries" charge more than regular bakeries but they make their stuff (at least the ones near me) with shortcut buttercream and no matter how trendy the flavor, it's just bland sweet crap.

Sriracha on everything, or sriracha flavored foods. This is nothing more but a serviceable hot sauce, solidly reliable but nothing to get worked up over. At least, not until white people "discovered" it.

Hipster coffee.

I mean I don't like it in the first place, but now I have people trying to convince me "well maybe you'll like the mocha with extra milk and pumpkin spice and whipped cream or whatever".

NO.

The gluten-free fad needs to fucking die already. Stop making it more expensive for people with celiac disease to get food.

Pumpkin spice. Especially how it's marketed like some special holiday treat. People, it's just a mix of cinnamon/nutmeg/clove, all of which are available year round.

-Bacon. Even before I was a vegetarian, I never liked bacon. It's just crunchy grease. (on the other hand, "Fake-on" (vegetarian bacon) is kind of good, but no, it doesn't taste much like real bacon)

-Greek yogurt. It's too tart.

-Diet pop with artificial sweeteners that aren't aspartame. Yes, aspartame is awful for you and diet pop, or any pop, is terrible. But I genuinely like the taste of Diet Coke (I don't drink it to diet, I just like it), it has a crisper taste than regular Coke. And Coke Zero is not an okay alternative.

Fruit in savory salads. Fruit should only be in fruit salads, I am purist.

That thing that fancy chefs do (or chefs trying to LOOK fancy) where they put a smear of sauce on the the plate. Why? What am I supposed to do with this?

Chilli in everything. So much of cooking everywhere has chilli in it... and I'm tired of it.

NO! I DON'T WANT CHILLI IN EVERYTHING! WHY CAN'T I JUST HAVE SAVOURY STUFF THAT DOESN'T BURN MY MOUTH OUT??!!!

...I was definitely not raised with a lot of chilli in my food.

Food bloggers that write paragraphs and paragraphs of some inane, pointless small talk on subjects that have nothing to do with food or the recipe. Just get to the damn recipe, already!
