What movies have you only been able to watch once?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not because they are bad. But because they are too depressing, graphic, weird.

Revolutionary Road. I don't know why it got me as badly as it did--it's Heavy, all right, but usually I wouldn't be very bothered by anything that didn't have a lot of, like, graphic gore/specific squicks for me. But I had to pause the movie about fifteen minutes from the end (so, before the abortion scene) and take a long walk because I thought I was going to be sick. I don't think I'll ever watch it again, but it was still a good movie.

Requiem For A Dream. I own it on DVD but have only been able to stomach watching it once.

I watched the Revenant last night and I know what movie I've never watching again. God, it was miserable. (Had some dudes I like in it though.)

There are movies I like but I've only been able to watch once because they make me cringe so much. I find it really hard to stomach stories where the entire plot is built on the fact that someone can't or won't explain something to someone else in a calm, rational manner. Like Ella Enchanted. Very sweet movie, such a cringeworthy premise that I've only watched it once. Cringe factor is also the reason why there are so many chick flicks I love with Hugh Grant in them that I can only rewatch if I've forgotten at least 60% of what happens in the movie.

I also liked the idea behind Sleepless in Seattle being a movie about how movies screw up your brain about romance, but the fact that they did it by making a movie that's supposed to screw up people's brains about romance makes it a movie I really can't rewatch.

For me, it's Hotel Rwanda. It's about the Rwandan genocide and I've seen several survivors speak after watching the movie and now just can't go back and watch it.

Any Day Now with Alan Cumming. I watched it once, without knowing more than just the basic info about it. The ending fucking killed me. I now thoroughly spoil myself when it comes to lgbt movies, all I'm saying.

Saw. Really well done horror movie, but I could only make it through once. I have a lower tolerance for on screen graphic violence than I do in written form. I love torture fics, but it turns out I can't watch it on screen.

Schindler's List, I thought the movie was very good but dear lord I could only watch it the once, it's just way too upsetting for me to watch again.

Mary and Max fits under all three of those categories. I heard it was sad, but when I first saw it I just went 'oh, quirky stop motion, I like quirky stop motion' and I had no idea what I was in for.

That being said, I've actually seen it three times now because I insist to people 'no really, you have to watch this movie.'

Bright Star. It also made avoid the rest of Ben Whishaw's filmography because it's apparently just James Bond movies and a big pit full of despair and misery.

I saw a good chunk of Antichrist before I noped out. I'd explain why but then Herpy would get all trunk-funked about spoilers.

American History X. Watched it with a couple of friends, and we all wanted to watch something happy afterwards.

The Tree of Life, mainly for the "weird" factor. I found it gorgeous and thought-provoking, don't at all regret watching it, but I don't think I'd ever be willing to sit through it again.

Actually this is pretty much how I feel about every Terrence Malick movie.

American Mary. It freaked me out and good. I disliked the whole experience but I'm not sure I'd say it's bad so much as violently weird.

Pan's Labyrinth- not a bad movie but depressing and unpleasant. I didn't see the end coming.

I'm struggling to think of something. Probably Requiem For A Dream, not because it was too depressing, but because once you know the ending the buildup is just kind of ...boring.

I don't think I would watch Buried again, also not because of the depressing factor but because the suspense is gone once you know the ending (although that movie is legit depressing as fuck).

...Mainly movies with twist endings that don't have a lot of action to them are ones I can't rewatch because I get bored as hell.

Well, in this case, it WAS bad. Oz, the Great and Powerful.

As for depressing, Marley and Me. :( I liked it well enough, for a Hallmark Channel feeling type movie, but I couldn't deal with the ending.

Saving Private Ryan
