Okay, how many canon gay characters ARE there in yaoi?

Second question: how many of them are not offensive stereotypes, that frequently confuse being trans with being gay? Not to mention absurdly flamboyant and over-the-top.

Third - what in the world then has been your experience with anime fans and canon gay characters? I'm seriously curious because I've been in loads of anime fandoms and would absolutely love anime/manga to evolve to the point where canon gay characters happen regularly, but unfortunately, 99.9999% of the time it's pure speculation.

ACTUAL Yaoi has plenty of canon gay characters. Think the Finder series, which has multiple canon gay couples. It's got it's own set of problems of course, but it is pretty popular right now. The key difference is demographic: yaoi in Japan is generally made for and consumed by straight women. Bara (like Mentaiko?) is more often for and by gay men buuuut I know a ton of female friends who love him so there you go.

There's enough yaoi manga that you can run the gamut between "hidden relationship" and "married with kids" and everything in between. Like most mediums, 90% if crap, but there is enough of it for there to be really good stuff (and not just angsty stuff either!).

I'm guessing you're in the English speaking fandom b/c there are vocal fujoshi against queer representation and rights in Japan. I don't know how common they are, but let's just go with it's not impossible to make a living from drawing gay couples and still preach about how gay rights aren't necessary/wanted.
