My experience with anime fandom is that people tend to ignore or dislike actually gay characters for some damn reason. I have seen people reaching to the skies to explain why the characters in their OTP are gay and how the author must be in the closet but when it comes to canonically queer characters the same people tend o analyze every detail of them to critize how they are portrayed.

I think it comes from the unusually strong fan reactions on either side. It seems like anime fandoms just run to strong extremes.

That's because most of the actually gay characters are offensive stereotypes who are played for jokes of "lol he terrifies all the other guys by hitting on them over and over lolol" and don't have any personality traits besides that.

sad and true, it's why I can't get behind the "canon" gay characters in my anime

In our little group of fujoshi friends, one thing we agree on is subtext is better than canon. I remember discussing with them series with canon gay couples and how, while the canons were often well-done and the characters likable, none of us felt that NEED to produce art/fic for the ship/series because, hey, it's canon.

Maybe things will change as the newer generation gets used to (and perhaps even expects) their yaoi ships to be canon, but for people like me, I'm still most comfortable making canonically straight anime characters gay. :P

Okay, how many canon gay characters ARE there in yaoi?

Second question: how many of them are not offensive stereotypes, that frequently confuse being trans with being gay? Not to mention absurdly flamboyant and over-the-top.

Third - what in the world then has been your experience with anime fans and canon gay characters? I'm seriously curious because I've been in loads of anime fandoms and would absolutely love anime/manga to evolve to the point where canon gay characters happen regularly, but unfortunately, 99.9999% of the time it's pure speculation.

ACTUAL Yaoi has plenty of canon gay characters. Think the Finder series, which has multiple canon gay couples. It's got it's own set of problems of course, but it is pretty popular right now. The key difference is demographic: yaoi in Japan is generally made for and consumed by straight women. Bara (like Mentaiko?) is more often for and by gay men buuuut I know a ton of female friends who love him so there you go.

There's enough yaoi manga that you can run the gamut between "hidden relationship" and "married with kids" and everything in between. Like most mediums, 90% if crap, but there is enough of it for there to be really good stuff (and not just angsty stuff either!).

I'm guessing you're in the English speaking fandom b/c there are vocal fujoshi against queer representation and rights in Japan. I don't know how common they are, but let's just go with it's not impossible to make a living from drawing gay couples and still preach about how gay rights aren't necessary/wanted.
