From the outside, it appears that anime fandom tends to be fragmented in that regard. You'll see a lot of "You idiots think X is gay? Ew!" stuff in general sites.

There are more homophobic people in fandom to counter them. Fandom is filled with more 'eww gay' people than supporters, and it's gross.

Thiiiis?! How have I not heard about this? It seems like anime is either yaoi genre, or not-yaoi genre where the guys never confirm they are gay. I am pretty sure hardly any manga, let alone anime, actually explore gayness. Better go watch it now.

It's mostly guys who watch anime for cute girls, though probably some homophobic female fans but mostly I've seen guys whine that they can't watch a gay main character.

I don't know this series, but when No.6--a show which until halfway through had been nothing more than the usual ho-yay subtext with a clear female love interest for the male MC--finally outed its MC as gay-leaning-bi for his crossdressing probably-has-prostituted-himself-on-many-an-occasion friend/savior, with multiple kisses over the course of the series, everyone seems to have been really happy...?

Granted, the gay ship was the by-far major ship of the fandom well before the reveal, so it was mostly everyone clapping themselves on the back and going "FINALLY! FINALLY!!" Maybe if the het ship had been the major ship there would've been more backlash?

I don't know this series either, but honestly I doubt that homophobia was the majority response. As you said, No. 6 is pretty universally celebrated for its gay inclusion. I find it very hard to believe that the same slash-crazy crowds would suddenly jump ship at canon gay. I'm guessing OP is referring to a few loud outliers/homophobes who felt "tricked".

No. 6 was another good rec I got from this site. I really liked that one. One of the few anime I've seen lately I plan on buying when I finally have disposable income.

Mmmmh not surprised, really. Some of them can't self-insert into the blond kid and they can't ship them either. Also no, the anime community is not above this level of drama. To this day there are still people that deny that Nezumi and Shion are canon in no. 6, and don't get me started on the Genshiken drama either.

Not saying that everyone is like that, of course. But sadly it's something that happens more often than not.

My experience with anime fandom is that people tend to ignore or dislike actually gay characters for some damn reason. I have seen people reaching to the skies to explain why the characters in their OTP are gay and how the author must be in the closet but when it comes to canonically queer characters the same people tend o analyze every detail of them to critize how they are portrayed.

That's because otaku's can't self insert into the guy to pair with the cute girl since he's gay and that triggers them.

Even though I hate teacher/student crushes with a passion it's kinda refreshing to see an openly gay character.

People already are in hard denial thinking up theories like "he only said that because he secretly has a crush on her and by pretending to be her rival in love..." and then they kind of lost me because being her rival in love would somehow make her love him? IDK...

I can see an anime go the "they were just confused, get over their crush for teacher and get together instead" route, though, so I'm still wary - it's only been 1 episode, after all.

I'm not familiar with the anime, but there are certain factions (i.e. swaths of fanboys) of anime fandom that will get super pissed if there's gay in a show that isn't explicitly marketed as shounen-ai, so I'm not surprised.
