I'm not familiar with the anime, but there are certain factions (i.e. swaths of fanboys) of anime fandom that will get super pissed if there's gay in a show that isn't explicitly marketed as shounen-ai, so I'm not surprised.

I'll never forget watching the comment threads on anime blogs as No. 6 aired...

I've seen a lot of female viewers lose their shit in this case as well, though, it's not just the guys.
