see, but that's the thing: a site that is heavily image based and shit about sourcing is inevitably going to have that problem. i'd say it's inherent to a platform like Tumblr.

Tumblr sucks. And it seems like it becomes less and less intuitive every time they change something about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why they keep changing it so often, and repeatedly breaking things in the process. Did they hire a lot of staff and need to find something for them to do?

It got to the point that I just gave up, since after every update I could no longer do basic stuff, each time something different, like not being able to post links, like posts, queue posts or or move items in my queue, with no indication of when it would be sorted. Then a few months later that particular thing would be fine again, with no announcement - but something else would be broken.

Add to that the malware that many tumblr blogs are plagued with now, the ones with ads that pop up unexpectedly. I no longer even feel safe browsing tumblr, and I used to love being on it.

Oh, there's also the fact that tumblr deletes blogs randomly for copyright violation. You follow a blog for years and it's suddenly all gone, original content as well. So much content deleted.

I don't think I followed a single tumblr blog ever without some kind of copyrighted material on it, even if it was just reaction gifs. Their whole of tumblr is based on posting copyrighted images. When you've had a few major blogs you follow suddenly deleted, it makes you aware that most of tumblr could be deleted tomorrow. So why bother with any of it?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand the problem- you're just upset that people are reblogging images they like on their personal Tumblrs? It's not Deviantart. It's not specifically geared toward original art.

I think they're upset about reposting (i.e. creating a new post with a fanwork) without credit, which is a pretty annoying thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I get that but it seems to me like they're overreacting.

[personal profile] a_potato 2016-01-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Gotcha.

And yeah, I kind of have to agree. Tumblr is fundamentally a blogging site, not an art site, so getting mad at it for not being like an art site is...a bit silly.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
RePOSTING. Unsourced and for notes, typically, as opposed to after asking the original artist for permission and properly credited.

PLEASE tell me you understand why that is not the right thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's thoughtless but it's not the WORST THING EVER.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
The secret doesn't say it's the worst thing ever, but the OP expresses annoyance at the practice because it makes it more difficult for them to find the sort of posts they're looking for. That seems more than fair to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the reposting culture so much.
It takes away the credit from the people who deserves it and makes searching for anything a pain, because it's impossible to avoid seeing some stuff over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that so many blogs just repost dozens and dozens of things and have hundreds of posts a day! Like, how much time did you really spend looking at this thing if you can queue up so much crap? There's curating a collection of stuff that you like and want to share, and then there's just shitting all over the internet. Tumblr really is a giant case of internet diarrhea most of the time.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2016-01-14 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
So what you're saying is....you want every post on Tumblr to be original, no reblogs of anything at all, ever?

So people who don't do art or make .gifs will basically...never get to post anything at all?

I'm very confused, here.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
If they have nothing beneficial to post, silence is golden.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaahhaaaaaa

Beneficial? Tumblr? Tumblr is 99% for wasting time and shrieking and squeeing and scrolling endlessly through things that hold your attention for maybe ten seconds. It's hardly an academic journal or something, pffft!

HA.
Oh, well, guess you'll have to live with the noise.
*goes to Tumblr and reblogs fun and pretty and sentimental things 4ever*

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I guess we should shut down the internet, then.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Rebloging and reposting are not the same thing.

You talk as if before tumblr almost no one posted any original content on their own blog/LJ/whatever and so there were many poor, poor fans who could never participate in fandom.

Some people are desperate for attention but are unable to contribute and create things, so they just steal from others. Tumblr would be a much better place if the likes and reblogs numbers weren't visible. Fuck your e-vagina.

Have you tried xkit? The site IS a huge pain in the ass, but xkit makes it bearable to browse it. Also from what I've noticed, some people are moving onto twitter or crosspost on both tumblr and twitter. Maybe you can find their twitter accounts and follow them there.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
On the other end you get people insisting that posting stuff from Pixiv (always specifically Pixiv) is stealing and harms the artist and so on...but Pixiv has a built in code for people TO post it elsewhere, and it's up to the artist to opt out of it.

It smacks of fetishization, given that this is only said of a Japanese site and nowhere else.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of the things I really hate about tumblr but I think it's a lost cause. People are jerks.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
What's funny is I feel like the reposting has made people never trust anyone.

Like I've seen people reblog (not repost) from someone who reblogged from me, and ask for a source, when I am very clearly the source if you took a second to look at my blog.

Reblogging is so much better then reposting though, I rarely get new followers from someone reposting, a reblog helps my blog a lot though.
