There has been a shift in what is popular, but I don't think anime in general is any worse now than it was ten years ago. More like how in any media there are better and worse years.

Just looking at the last five years we have had fun series like:
Madoka Magica
Space Brothers
Kill la Kill
Attack on Titan
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
the Hunter X Hunter remake
Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure
Steins;Gate
a bunch of solid sports Anime ranging from bicycle racing to basketball to karuta to ping pong
One Punch Man
My Love Story
Space Dandy
Silver Spoon
Tiger and Bunny

A bunch of different genres, subject matter, and art styles.

But doesn't that make anon's point? Those are a bunch of mainstream shows that are all completely different style- and topic-wise.

I actually have seen most of those titles, and enjoyed them to varying degrees, though not as much as I enjoyed my favourite titles as a teenager.

It's just that those kinds of big titles get taken by the big names/old-timers in the industry. If you're a peon like me, by default you work on almost exclusively crap. I don't know if I can stick through it long enough to get there. There's also the low pay and the long hours. The kind of low pay and long hours you have to really love the job to put up with.

I've been toying with the idea of going back to school for a while now. I'm probably just going to quit and go study computer science instead. More money, more stability, and maybe I can stop hating anime so much.
