Yes, you can blame it on the moe-ization of anime.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So was most anime great before moe happened or something?

Honestly, OP fucked up by doing something they love, especially entertainment related.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, this is the Winter 1995 chart, it's much worse than this year's.

This is why the advice to get a job doing something that you love can often be bad advice. Once you're doing something because you have to and it's for pay, it can suck all the love out of it really quickly.

Personally, I always say that I'd love to volunteer to help out my favorite band like with a street team or something like that, but I'd never want to actually get a paying job with them.

If you turn fun into work, what do you do for fun?

I think in OP's case, perhaps they'd be happier off creating anime/manga? I mean, it sounds like they're stuck in marketing or translation which, while involved with the industry, isn't really the industry itself. Also just because it's super hard for foreigners to break in doesn't mean it's impossible! Look at the gaijin who drew for Prince of Tennis or that Brazilian guy (who is albeit part Japanese) who has amazing rainbow-eyed doujins.

ANYWAYS, it feels like OP really enjoyed cakes or baking or whatnot but instead of signing on to be a baker (or even a baking critique), went on to do marketing/health and safety... which is related and important but not really baking.

only masochistic fools become a mangaka or an animator

it's doubtful has the skills for it either

sucks that most anime (even the good ones) are a glorified commercial though. there's so few anime originals anymore. and burn-out's inevitable when you're dealing with 90% of all entertainment is shit.

i say get out and use your skills to go into a different, but related field. take a break from anime and give it another go watching the 10% that doesn't suck.

and at this point, moe is a meaningless buzzword. just say you think most anime is shit, it's way more direct.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Can't you find some edgy title to do what you do for? (Unless you're a voice actor, in which case, sucks to be you.) On the upside, nothing last forever. Maybe next year the hard hitting, non moe genres will make a resurgence.

If it's moe, it's pretty much guaranteed to get released in the US at some point, so I'm not surprised that it's been most of what you've been stuck with. That sucks though, OP.

There a lot of good non-moe titles so maybe you could try checking out a few newer titles that you aren't working on? That might help, if you haven't already.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, most of everything is pretty lousy. I have better luck in manga because I know what authors to look for and what plots/characters work for me but if you're doing it for pay, it's not tailored to your taste. That said, I've thought for a long time that if I could edit manga translations for a living, I'd be set.

+1, I had a job in publishing in a field that I loved and I soon grew to hate it because it turned out that 99% of everything was shit and now it was my job to filter it. I moved to a similar job in a field I was less involved with and it was much better - 99% of everything was still shit but now I didn't care.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's the problem of getting a job doing something related to something you love.

Once you're there, you can't be picky and stick to what you love, but you have to deal with all the boring shit that you used to ignore as a fan/amateur.

Just remember that nowadays, more anime is being made, and more anime is being brought to the US. They're less discerning about what gets an adaptation, and tons of stuff are brought over. So there's no real filter on anything, and that's part of why there's more crap.

Most of the anime I work on are moeshit that I hate

There's your problem, overexposure to something you hate. I tend to avoid moeshit because it's not my cup of tea, but I can imagine how you feel. Is there a chance you can get out of moehell and try to work on something you might enjoy?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're just getting out of anime? It happened to me, it happens to a lot of people. I still like anime, but I'm not as obsessive about it as I used to be.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
There has been a shift in what is popular, but I don't think anime in general is any worse now than it was ten years ago. More like how in any media there are better and worse years.

Just looking at the last five years we have had fun series like:
Madoka Magica
Space Brothers
Kill la Kill
Attack on Titan
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
the Hunter X Hunter remake
Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure
Steins;Gate
a bunch of solid sports Anime ranging from bicycle racing to basketball to karuta to ping pong
One Punch Man
My Love Story
Space Dandy
Silver Spoon
Tiger and Bunny

A bunch of different genres, subject matter, and art styles.

mainstream/10

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.....?

Most of the /obscure/ stuff I now is older and/or not relevent to the discussion. We can have a dick measuring recs contest if you like though.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
But doesn't that make anon's point? Those are a bunch of mainstream shows that are all completely different style- and topic-wise.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have seen most of those titles, and enjoyed them to varying degrees, though not as much as I enjoyed my favourite titles as a teenager.

It's just that those kinds of big titles get taken by the big names/old-timers in the industry. If you're a peon like me, by default you work on almost exclusively crap. I don't know if I can stick through it long enough to get there. There's also the low pay and the long hours. The kind of low pay and long hours you have to really love the job to put up with.

I've been toying with the idea of going back to school for a while now. I'm probably just going to quit and go study computer science instead. More money, more stability, and maybe I can stop hating anime so much.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not all anime is the same. If you really wanted to work in R&B, and you ended up in Nashville producing folk-pop acts, you'd get sick of it too--even if it's still "American music."

You are justified in not liking this stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're working for the wrong company? I don't keep up as much as I used to but even I know not EVERYTHING coming out is Moe.

I do think there's more crap then there used to be but a lot of that is because there is just MORE then there used to be and studios are churning out crap a lot faster. Once Japan figured out there was an international audience for anime, things changed a lot, and not all for the better.

There's still good stuff out there though. But this is why I don't watch anything and everything anime anymore, I just watch a few titles here and there. I don't know if I'd want to be watching it all the time.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
When you're breaking into any creative industry, you're going to start off with the shittiest jobs unless you're exceptionally lucky. Only a few get to work on the good stuff. If that's going to kill your love of your hobby, either accept it or find a new career.

Turning your passion into a job is often a really bad idea, if only because those jobs tend to be the same one a lot of people want to do, so that means the competition is fierce and the work conditions and pay are appalling, since so many people will do it for peanuts just to live their dream.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. That's what I've noticed about this industry. Everyone working for digital, like Crunchy or whatever, gets totally shit pay and you work 60 hour+ weeks.

I'd probably hate it less if I had more time off to watch good anime. But I just work all the time. After almost 3 years, I'm hitting burnout point. I don't want to live like this anymore.

I'm watching Shirobako right now, and I can't stop thinking "how can all these people be so passionate about making some shit moe anime?? Why don't they get frustrated about the hours and the pay and bail??" I know animators in Japan get paid even less than I do.
