I really loved that movie, but it kind of reached my limit for Chariots of the Gods-type stuff, you know? (The TV show struck me as a bit too goofy to take seriously in that regard and the mythology eventually spiraled out into its own thing, so I found it tolerably inoffensive). I'm fearful of what a new trilogy would do. I never read the sequel novels, but somehow I got the feeling the movies were intended to be more heavy-handed along those lines (for example, my Stargate DVD has an interview Erich von Däniken that I've never watched).

Oh my gosh, Chariots of the Gods! I haven't thought about that book in years.

The history geek in me is glad someone brought this up. I enjoyed the movie, but yeah, its roots in von Däniken's racist theories kind of spoils the crazy sci-fi spin on Ancient Egypt a little.

Hollywood is really scraping the barrel.

Welp, I didn't (dislike the tv shows), but this will be...something. Good or bad, who knows, but maybe I'll give it a shot.

Having enjoyed the TV shows, I would've liked something new on that front instead of more films, but I guess that ship sailed a long time ago.

They're rebooting this? Huh.

...I actually quite enjoyed SG-1, but I'm always down for a new interpretation of god-aliens.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Loved the movie, found the show unwatchable.

I liked both the movie and SG-1 and Atlantis.

I thought the TV shows did a good job of, well, expanding the universe of the movie. There some tonal differences, but they worked for me. Anyway, I don't think there needs to be a reboot, but, um, I hope you get what you're looking for.

I love both but for different reasons since they weren't very similar to each other. I don't think this necessarily needs a reboot though but I guess I'll see how it goes.

The movie was okay, but I loved SG1. I could take or leave Atlantis. But I think the characterization was better on SG1 than the movie, and the expanded the concept pleasingly and created a whole wide universe.

Fuck yourself OP you piece of shit.

Whoa whoa. Everyone's entitled to an opinion.

Aww. I loved the movie as a kid and I loved Atlantis, too.

Hey, I'm just glad there will be more Stargate in general. It's an awesome concept. And maybe it will bring more fans to the TV series. :D

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Probably will. From what I hear, smaller Trek fandoms experienced upticks in popularity after the reboot movies came out.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Liked SG1, loved Atlantis, the movie was OK but nothing special. I won't be watching it when it comes out. A new SGA or SG1 movie and I'd be incredibly happy though.

I agree - I'd love an SG1 movie. Especially if it focused on the Goa'uld. I found the Ori boring.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just kinda bummed that Teal'c and Sam won't be in the reboot. They were my favourites in SG-1.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I must admit I never liked the movie, but I did love the shows (at least to begin with - they kinda spiraled in the direction of soap opera when it came to the relationships of the main characters).

But good luck to you, I guess. Hopefully you'll get more of what you like :)

It's been half a decade since I've seen either the movie or the tv show. I remember vaguely liking the movie and just being completely bored by the series.

I was excited about the series when it was first announced, until I read an interview with the movie's creators expressing their disappointment at the way the franchise was being taken from them and put into directions that they didn't want for it, how they had had a plan for sequels that they weren't going to get to make because of the series.

When, about a decade later, I finally did see the series on the recommendation of a friend and coworker, I was almost immediately turned off by the contempt that the first episode showed for the movie. It wasn't enough to establish that everything the movie established was incorrect (and I think it mocked the characters for believing that, though I can't recall accurately enough), it wasn't enough to kidnap Daniel's wife only to eventually kill her (I get that they "needed" a macguffin to bring Daniel back, because that character was somehow irreplaceable), they also had to completely remove the original extraterrestrial civilization forever and have the boy that the colonel connected with to get over the loss of his son kidnapped (and eventually killed, because once his macguffin-ness is gone they had no interest in him). The first two I can see from a storytelling standpoint. The third I side eye but wouldn't normally judge, but the last was just gratuitous.

So when I see series fans complain that the new movies will shit upon the series and prevent the franchise from being resurrected more than 5 years after the last new episode, I can't help but think of them as hypocrites. Not because they think the new movies are going to be bad (I rather agree) and not because they'd rather have new fiction set in the world they enjoy, but because that complaint goes against the very ethos of the show that they love.

I agree with you that the treatment of Sha're in the series was terrible (there's a couple of fics out there that change her fate in one way or another, everything from having her be rescued to having Daniel be the one who is taken by the Goa'uld instead).

So far as Skaara is concerned, however - Skaara got a plot arc. He was saved from the Goa'uld, he became a leader for his people, and in the end he didn't die but ascended to a higher state of being (which sounds pretty wacky when I lay it out there, but in the show was hugely emotionally impactful). The Abydonians were a recurring part of the show until the end of Season 6, and the reason they blew up Abydos and had everyone ascend was because they thought the show was being canceled and were trying to give it a big, impactful finish. And then they got renewed.
