I think it's because we're so fucking puritanical (in the US, of course not speaking for other countries) that people think women who have been sexually violated are somehow ruined.

Um. People in the US get counseling and have the opportunity to get on with their lives unlike many middle eastern countries where they are punished or killed.

Don't diss your own society when it at least tries to get things right.

I agree that rape is a terrible crime, but the heavy-handedness in which it's treated as somehow worse than murder is not, unfortunately, getting it right. Victims need to be allowed to recover and not feel that they are somehow damaged beyond repair.
