Is rape such a terrible crime because women are the primary victims of it, or are women the primary victims of it because it's so terrible?

To clarify: it's a horrible crime because it's a profound violation of autonomy; it happens more to women because of the way that the patriarchal structure of society shapes our understanding of sexual behavior, sexual roles, and power.

So is mugging. so is maiming. so it kiddenapping. so it war. so is all kinds of abuse. The sense of violation is no lesser to a woman who has been blinded by an acid attach then a woman who has been raped, but Rape stands above all of those crimes. Why?

It's like the chicken and the egg question but horrible!

Yup. Or not Quite a chicken. And that bird hatched from an egg laid by another animal that was more lizard than bird. and so on and so forth. The egg has been around so much longer than the chicken.

Originally it wasn't so terrible a crime, but the taaboo against it came from the fact that it was happening to women. Or more specifically the men who owned that women. The rapist was robbing the man of something of value i.e is wife or daughters social value. These days it's mostly done to women not because it's so terrible but because it has been culturally parsed as the crime women endure. Birds fly, men start war and women are raped.

It's kinda common knowledge.

I think it's because we're so fucking puritanical (in the US, of course not speaking for other countries) that people think women who have been sexually violated are somehow ruined.

Um. People in the US get counseling and have the opportunity to get on with their lives unlike many middle eastern countries where they are punished or killed.

Don't diss your own society when it at least tries to get things right.

I agree that rape is a terrible crime, but the heavy-handedness in which it's treated as somehow worse than murder is not, unfortunately, getting it right. Victims need to be allowed to recover and not feel that they are somehow damaged beyond repair.

I have more to say on this line of thing, but it's late and I need to sleep.

No it's a horrible crime because it's a horribly crime, and dehumanizes the victim, and removes them of their right to bodily autonomy.

So do so many other crimes. Rape is worse than almost all of them.

But most of those other crimes have a specific reason (money and such). Rape doesn't. Rape has no purpose that can not be fulfilled in a less violating way.

Well, it's a specific type of physical assaults. Many physical assaults happen without a particular "reward" other than the act itself.
