Yeah but most people didn't spend their entire childhood watching the dead classmate and listening to his words and purchasing media he played a huge part in. Dead classmate did not have any influence on their lives, so when they express regret it's just 'this is how you respond when people die.'

People don't know celebrities personally but that doesn't mean they don't have an influence on them.

scriptwriter probably had more influence on those movies, but it's not like anyone gives a shit when they die.

I've definitely seen people get upset over script writers and directors. Jim Henson caused quite a stir.

But there's also a difference between the abstract idea of a story and the concrete idea of someone in front of you, moving and speaking, and enjoying them in most or all roles they play.
