For what it's worth, you're not alone. I gave it a fair shake (7 or 8 episodes), and I could NOT get into it.

It gets alot better just around that point sadly imo. But I didn't hate it so it sounds like you were already in a different place.

Maybe. I admit I tried to watch it after the whole Zamii mess broke, so I was already looking for excuses not to like it (had more than enough crazy-assed fandoms in my life, thanks).

I'm sure everyone agrees that the fandom is awful.

I watched half an episode, hated all the characters, and thought the designs were ugly.

Personally, I think the show is too self-aware and careful, if that makes any sense? It feels like everything in it is very carefully calculated to conform to specific messages and ideas and it loses a lot of the looseness and spontaneity that more rough, make-shit-up kids' shows have, where yeah there's a moral in there, but a lot of the screentime is full of stuff that's just fun and has nothing to do with the moral. (My Little Pony FiM had a similar problem).

How many of the show's fans who wank about it all over ~~Tumblr~~ the internet are actually in the target demographic, though? I'm guessing <1%.

It happens. Sometimes you watch something that everyone else likes and that you think you should/would like, and it just doesn't click.

I think it has a very slow pacing. The story unfolds a little at a time rather than in a clear cut arc and that could certainly throw a lot of people off if you're not getting enjoyment out of Steven's day to day stuff.

It really likes to give you what Steven knows when he knows it, which can be a problem when the other characters can't or won't tell him what the hell's going on. I'd love to see it shift POVs more and provide more information.

Please no. It's already been firmly established from Steven's POV. To shift to others this late in the game would be as jarring as an author suddenly changing tenses in the middle of a book for no apparent reason.

I like the character designs and enjoy the show but like with everything else it wont appeal to everyone, it does have a slow start though but it didn't bug me so much so I could carry on watching it.

Overall I don't think the show is very well-directed. It has a lot of strange, clumsy moments that totally kill any emotional momentum a scene has - and it completely obliterates the comedy.

It's gotten better though.

I feel like SU is all potential with rare to no pay off.

Like I sometimes wonder if a big reason it's so popular is because people headcanon a lot of things that aren't on screen and that makes it great fanfic and fanart fodder.

Yeah, most mega popular things are decent but not great, but have a really good "what if" potential and vague enough character that fandom can do whatever its heart contents with them.

I kiiiinda want to get into it just to bond with my sister who is a gigantic fan, but... she showed me one episode and I just cannot see the appeal at all.

I have somewhat of a similar feeling with Gravity Falls. It has everything I adore (urban fantasy setting, ridiculously funny humor, grand epic plot, engaging characters, etc.), but for the life of me, I am not excited or in love with this show as I feel like I'd be. I'm caught up with the show, but I often have to marathon the last couple of episodes because I don't keep track of airdates. I feel so "meh" towards GF and it's just, why? Why do I not like the show more?

So yeah, I kinda get that, OP.

I'm always baffled by this opinion. I think the art is spectacularly ugly. I could never bring myself to watch it based on that alone, long before it became the latest big thing in fandom drama. Which is a shame because I <3 popcorning fandom drama, and I'd otherwise be tempted to watch it for that factor alone.

(Yes, yes, "Not everyone likes the same thing? Shocking!" - but I am nonetheless genuinely befuddled whenever anyone finds this visually appealing.)

The color pallet is actually pretty good, but yeah agree with you on the character art.
