Books!

This is a What Are You Reading thread, so: what are you reading?

Do writing manuals count?

I'm in between books right now. But I just read Stephen King's Revival over the weekend and read The Valhalla Project by Andy McDermott yesterday (snow day, so no work). I'm planning to start King's Mr. Mercedes next....

I'm finishing up a re-read of Garth Nix's Old Kingdom Trilogy. I'll have to see if I can borrow Clariel from a friend, should I see her next month (she lives far away, but close to my sister).

It's the first time I've ever re-read them, and I had forgotten a lot, especially in Sabriel. I'd forgotten entirely that Ancelstierre has a 20th century level of technology (1910s-20s in Sabriel; 1930s-40s in Abhorsen).

War and Peace. It's...taking a while. The POV keeps hopping from characters I give a shit about to characters I don't.

Falling Sideways, by Tom Holt. The books I've read of his are more than a little samey (complete loser of a man gets trapped in ridiculous supernatural situation, falls in love with gorgeous but unpleasant woman, somehow makes it work), but good lord his writing style is irresistible.

Diana Wynne Jones!!!!!

My friend just got me into her. In the past few months I've gone through Hexwood, all of the Chrestomanci books, and Deep Secret, the latter of which is probably my favorite so far but they're ALL amazing. I'm hooked.

She's lending me Howl's Moving Castle next, which I look forward to; I've already seen the Miyazaki movie for it so it'll be interesting to see how it compares.

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson

The Eternal World by Christopher Farnsworth

and I'm about to start The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. I'll probably pick up a few more books at the library before Saturday in anticipation of getting stuck in due to the snow storm.

Last thing I read was The Brilliant History of Color in Art, by Victoria Finlay.

If you like this cover, you'll probably like the book.

I recently tried the first three Shadowdance books by David Dalglish. They answer a question I never expected to be asked: what if Drizzt Do'Urden kind of sucked?

I'm not being entirely facetious. The main character is the purest Drizzt clone I've seen since Drizzt himself, but he's plonked down into a much more GRIMDARK setting where he doesn't have the advantage. He doesn't always have the skill or luck to save everyone, and it's never quite certain whether he'll be able to pull off a good ending. This actually makes him a lot more relatable than I expected.

Ultimately, this isn't quite the style of dark fantasy I go for--I'm more "characters will have their brains violated by Lovecraftian horrors" than "characters will have their bodies violated, but only if they're female and the narration makes note of how great their tits are." Still, if this is the kind of thing you read, you could do a lot worse.

I'm reading 'Corelli's Mandolin' by Louis de Bernieres and 'The Great Influenza' by John Barry. I'm not far along in either, yet.

I can say that the beginning of 'The Great Influenza' is a quick jaunt through the history of medicine, and it's got me wanting to learn more in that vein (so I'll probably buy a book or two dealing with that after this, heh).

Mingmei Yip's Peach Blossom Pavillion. It sort of reminds me of Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha in that it's about prostitution and the heroine is a prostitute, but this novel is written by a Chinese author. Not really a work of literary fiction, but a decent read.

Ranma 1/2. I'm halfway through the series. I'm also re-reading The Blue Castle.

I just finished reading Poison, by Bridget Zinn this morning and just started on Zoe's Tale, by John Scalzi. I'm also rereading one of my favorite Saddle Club books, Saddle Sore, because I'm thinking about doing some more work on my preteen horse novel that I haven't touched in years.

I am reading that stupid 50 Shades of Grey book, because a friend lent it to me, and I hate it. At first, it was indulgent sort of isn't-this-stupid dislike. But the more I read, the more I hate it.

And I'm one of those nutty people who HAS to finish whatever books they start, so I'm hate-reading my way to the end, when I can say with authority and endless detail, just exactly why this is a stupid book.

tl;dr I do not recommend this book.

I'm very close to finishing up Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. I'd heard the basics about that whole story, but getting into more of the details of the crime and its aftermath has been very fascinating. And heartbreaking.

And I recently finished reading Anne Serling's As I Knew Him, about Rod Serling. That was a cool story. If that book is anything to go by, he sounded like a pretty awesome guy.

I also found it quite moving and relatable because of the father/daughter theme that ran throughout the book.
