Thomas killed himself?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He survived.

Oh good. I probably saw the season OP is talking about but DA is one of those shows that I forget as soon as I watch it.

He had to look at the face in your icon.

this could be accurate depending on the circumstances under which they might come in contact with one another...

His homosexuality was tolerated which for the time period was about the best anyone in his position could expect. Most servants would have been tossed out on their ear with no reference for being what was considered a 'pervert'. The rest of the staff has issues with him because he teamed up with that nasty Baxter and they both acted like assholes.

"That nasty Baxter"

I can't tell if you're trolling, didn't watch the show all that much or really missed the point of her character that much.

Sorry I did meant O'Brien. The one that caused Cora to lose the baby. I mixed up the names.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Should have thought of this myself - in this case, I agree!

I think you mean O'Brian. She was in seasons 1-3. Baxter was the nice one from his past in seasons 4 onwards.

And I am a firm believer that people didn't like Thomas because he was a smarmy git who had no depths he wouldn't stoop to to try and get ahead in a job he loathed. He stole, kidnapped the dog of his employer, framed colleagues, played with other people's feelings just to get at others who had done no wrong to him, and was generally a all around nasty bloke to everyone but O'Brian, even when people like Anna tried to be nice and friendly. A bloke who happened to be gay in a time when it wasn't accepted. Given how much he did, many tried to do, he should have been fired a dozen times over, never mind at the end when he was superfluous to the needs of the house. And they were kind enough to give him all the time he needed/wanted to find a new position, rather than two weeks notice or anything.

Thank you. I mixed up the names. I was thinking of the the first lady's maid.

Lol!I was beginning to think Thomas had had some sort of personality transplant since I haven't watched the show in a while. I just remember him being so unrepentantly unpleasant to people, but you wouldn't know it from the way people talk about him. Especially with all the hate Mary gets for being unlikable. It's possible she got progressively worst, but I don't remember her being anywhere as nasty as he was.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have mixed feelings on Thomas, honestly. To one degree, I feel like a lot of the reason that the people in the house didn't accept him was because of his attitude and the things he'd done, rather than his sexuality. Not that his being gay didn't have anything to do with it, of course, like with Carson telling him that he was a foul creature as just one example. It wouldn't have all been peaches and cream if he'd been nicer- so the idea that no one was prejudiced against him was false. Especially since if anybody had decided to report him, that would've meant a prison sentence. That's certainly prejudice. I just think that he would've had a much easier time at Downton if he hadn't been such a complete and utter bastard.

That being said, I understand how he got that way, and I wouldn't wish his situation on anybody, that's for sure. He's still a bastard, but he's a pitiable/sympathetic character for me. You can't live with that level of constant fear and persecution without it changing you.

Also, the suicide attempt made perfect sense to me. Sometimes people just snap. It doesn't have to have a long, drawn out depressive episode before that- not to mention that he was having an EXTREMELY difficult time then, and we definitely saw the cracks forming in his shell a long time ago. If it came as a surprise, then you weren't paying attention.

All of this. I loved Thomas from episode one, but he was a jackass quite often, though he mellowed as the seasons/years went on. And his love of the children really broke my heart, and when they came 'downstairs' to say goodbye to him....

To be gay in that time, and in his place was a huge, huge strain, and him *never* having any suicidal thoughts would have been the surprising turn of events, in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I am pretty much the same. I think at least part of his actions was to give people a reason to hate him, rather than just hating him because of what he was. Not that this excuses his behavior, but I think it was one of the motivating factors...
