I have mixed feelings on Thomas, honestly. To one degree, I feel like a lot of the reason that the people in the house didn't accept him was because of his attitude and the things he'd done, rather than his sexuality. Not that his being gay didn't have anything to do with it, of course, like with Carson telling him that he was a foul creature as just one example. It wouldn't have all been peaches and cream if he'd been nicer- so the idea that no one was prejudiced against him was false. Especially since if anybody had decided to report him, that would've meant a prison sentence. That's certainly prejudice. I just think that he would've had a much easier time at Downton if he hadn't been such a complete and utter bastard.

That being said, I understand how he got that way, and I wouldn't wish his situation on anybody, that's for sure. He's still a bastard, but he's a pitiable/sympathetic character for me. You can't live with that level of constant fear and persecution without it changing you.

Also, the suicide attempt made perfect sense to me. Sometimes people just snap. It doesn't have to have a long, drawn out depressive episode before that- not to mention that he was having an EXTREMELY difficult time then, and we definitely saw the cracks forming in his shell a long time ago. If it came as a surprise, then you weren't paying attention.

All of this. I loved Thomas from episode one, but he was a jackass quite often, though he mellowed as the seasons/years went on. And his love of the children really broke my heart, and when they came 'downstairs' to say goodbye to him....

To be gay in that time, and in his place was a huge, huge strain, and him *never* having any suicidal thoughts would have been the surprising turn of events, in my mind.

I am pretty much the same. I think at least part of his actions was to give people a reason to hate him, rather than just hating him because of what he was. Not that this excuses his behavior, but I think it was one of the motivating factors...
