George Lucas specifically said that Anakin's problem is that he confuses possessive and compassionate love (in a Rolling Stone interview).
But when they got together, Anakin had never done anything to hurt Padmé. He was fucked up, but when she told him to back off, he did.
The films examine how Anakin's obsessions and control freak nature lead him down the Dark Side to destroy himself and his wife. But this is an integral part of the narrative. It never pretends that they're a happily-ever-after couple.
