That actually makes Anakin/Padme worst. They had a romantic relationship turn abusive. At least with Reylo they had no prior relationship.

But I do think there's a difference in that people knew Anakin was turning into a villain. Anakin would go on to be one of the biggest bads of all time.

But when Kylo does the same villainous actions people want him redeemed? I don't understand.

Personally I don't see what makes Reylo different from any other villain/hero ship :/

Eh, Kylo did imply that he would stop attacking Rey if she just gave up and allowed him to teach her how to control the force. Granted, he was saying this as he was trying to knock her off a cliff and only moments before hand, he had brutally injured and attacked her friend. But that's still way more mercy then Anakin ever showed anyone.
But whatever they're both asscracks.

And for all the people wondering why kylo/rey is getting more hate then most hero/villian ships, TFA didn't really show kylo with any positive or redeeming traits like most other popular villains. If the future Star Wars movies decide to focus on Kylo and who he was before he turned to the dark side, or show him trying to find redemption, I'm sure Kylo/Ren would rise in popularity.
This is just my dumb theory btw don't quote me on any of this.

I've said it before but I'll say it again:

Padmé/Anakin is literally the anti-Twilight in that it acknowledges how fucked up their relationship is

George Lucas specifically said that Anakin's problem is that he confuses possessive and compassionate love (in a Rolling Stone interview).

But when they got together, Anakin had never done anything to hurt Padmé. He was fucked up, but when she told him to back off, he did.

The films examine how Anakin's obsessions and control freak nature lead him down the Dark Side to destroy himself and his wife. But this is an integral part of the narrative. It never pretends that they're a happily-ever-after couple.

I'm anti-Reylo not because 'wah wah abusive' but because why would Rey want anything to do with Kylo? I think people are just using her as a self insert because they like Kylo.

This fandom just is ridiculous. There are so many different ways to take both ships. Anakin/Padme in canon clearly ended up abusive, though it didnt' start out that way. I'm not sure you can call Rey/Kylo abusive because they were two enemies fighting. They weren't romantic partners. Torture isn't good, but Kylo was a villain. And torturing an enemy doesn't mean that you are going to also be abusive towards your romantic partner. I don't love Rey/Kylo, but when I do read it I always prefer Rey as the dominant one anyway. So a lot of assumptions are being made by fans about how other fans ship and a lot of judgments of feelings about fictional relationships. This fandom is kind of a trainwreck.

Reylo has the advantage of being well acted too. No one would ever accuse Anakin/ Padme (Aname? If that's not the ship name, it should be.) of that.

After watching the prequels again during the holidays I was reminded by how much I ship Padme/Anakin and their messy relationship, it was the right kind of angst for me or something, and while I don't ship Reylo myself I can see why it would appeal. Hero/villain ships are usually pretty popular.

What did Kylo do to Rey that is so unforgivable by Star Wars standards?

Tried to read her mind? All jedi do that. They also manipulate thoughts to make other people do things too, not only to their enemies but civilians too.

The only real bad things are he killed Han and injured her friend, but that is less an abusive relationship thing and more a typical villain thing.

I mean, I don't think Rey would ever want to be with him anyways but the way people overreact to this pretty standard hero/villain ship is ridiculous. Especially given that jedi powers have to do with the mind.

Unless those people are shipping Anakin/Padme PAST the point of it becoming an abusive relationship, I think this is false equivalence.

There is literally no point in the film where Reylo would not be terrible and abusive.

Like, it doesn't have anything /directly/ to do with Rey, but constantly beating on shit when you're angry (and genociding 5 planets with your super laser) seems like a bad boyfriend warning sign.
Not that you can't enjoy writing for that pairing or whatever, but I personally just can't see that going well.

Also WOAH on people who are going "torture is just something that happens in war." Dick Cheney why are you writing about SW shipping?
