A small addition to all of the other great advice you've gotten:

Do not edit. Do not even look at what you're writing. Just go. Let the words do what they're gonna do, and don't think about fixing them up until after you've gotten them all out.

The impulse to edit-as-you-go slows the writing process way down. It's amazing how much more productive you can be when you stop doing it.

This.

Editing as I write is always my downfall. I have to give myself permission to let whatever I write suck, and be out of order, and not make a lot of sense in some places. If I can't think of a name for something right of the bat I'll write (name of thing here) and keep going.

My writing has become a lot more productive, and I've found the editing process to be a lot more enjoyable when I'm just editing instead of trying to edit and write at the same time.

I'm the same way! If I edit as I go, then I wind up obsessing over one or two sentences, and pretty soon, an hour's gone by and I've barely written a paragraph.

The primary benefit of NaNoWriMo for me has long been the fact that it forces me to get out of my head and just write.

DA but this doesn't work for me and I've tried it a lot. I inevitably end up writing shit like "this is me writing yes I am writing look at me writing all these words oh god I can't even think I'm gonna go cry now".

What does work is when I have the time and space, going off by myself and just daydreaming and going through the story over and over in my head. Then I can sit down and type it up fairly quick. Unfortunately it takes a lot of time and effort to get my head into that "mode".

That's interesting! You're the first person I've come across for whom that hasn't worked. But, well, it's logical that not every method would work for everyone.

If you don't mind me asking, what sorts of things do you do to get yourself into that "mode?"

When the weather is nice (so, not for another few months), I go for walks in the woods. Sometimes I just pace around my room tossing a baseball around while I daydream. But I also need to not have any other distractions or responsibilities, and reading before I do it helps a lot too. I always feel inspired after doing a few hours of reading.

This reminds me of an author who was presenting at a panel I went to at a con. I can't remember who she was, sadly, but she talked about how, to get into the proper headspace to write, and to work through thorny plot problems, she would go for these long, meandering drives.

Time- and energy-consuming though it may be, it's cool you've got tricks to get you where you need to be to do what you need to do!

Oh yeah driving works too! I have an hour commute so sometimes my thoughts go to amazing places...but then I get to work and I have to...work. Heh. Excuses, excuses.
