Writer Advice

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I signed up for a writing fest and we're getting down to the deadline. I have the outline and it's a high word count fest so it has to be long. I've barely started and this is my last real weekend to make progress. I need to write a lot to have hope of making the deadline.

Does anyone have any advice to keep me on track? I'm going to try to speed write but I've never done that before (I have the bad habit of editing while writing). I have concentration and attention span issues, and am very easily distracted.

Camping out in this thread because this is me.

Off topic, but I've been wondering for a while who your icon is of.

Hey, i feel like we haven't seen you around here in a really long time? Anyway, my icon is Luke Harper, a wrestler in the WWE. He's amazing and I love him.

Hello! Yeah, I've been posting anonymous for the past year after an f!s user was kind of nasty to me for no reason other than because they thought it was funny. But I think enough time has past and I don't see that user around anymore, so I've been logging in again!

But thank you for satisfying my curiosity!

Ah, that's awful. I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you're back in the namespace now though. And you're welcome.

No TV. If music, instrumental. Take breaks, stretch, have water. Be sure to do a little exercise now and then, stuff that stimulates the mind. I have a stationary bike, for example.

Then park your ass and motherfuckin' write.

Try listening to video game soundtracks? They're designed to keep you engaged with what you're doing.

web blocker, work in intervals, get some fresh air, a good glass of water, and caffeine of your choice, if you're planning on pulling an all nighter

you got a mic? record your voice. then you can just say whatever comes to your head and go back and type and edit later.

Set a timer. Write for half an hour. Take a ten minute break. Lather, rinse, repeat.

If you can do it with other people (we call them Word Wars; you compare your wordcount to everyone else's when the timer goes off), that's good too, because it creates instant accountability, as long as no one is the type to go "Oh, is that all?" Any wordcount is good wordcount, because it's more than you started with. You can do it via IM or in a chatroom.

Editing while writing can slow you down, but as long as you're just insta-editing typos and such, that's not too bad. Allow yourself to suck. It's a first draft. They suck by definition, and that's okay.

*\o/* You can do it!

Maybe check out some word crawls on the NaNoWriMo forums*?

I found that it helped me just churn out words during NaNo. Some are fandom themed as well, if that's a motivation, like Extreme Harry Potter Crawl: Year One**

cold water, hot tea, change the music if it's not jiving, maybe try and get a writing buddy to do sprints with, make sure you stand up every like two hours to stretch & pee

A small addition to all of the other great advice you've gotten:

Do not edit. Do not even look at what you're writing. Just go. Let the words do what they're gonna do, and don't think about fixing them up until after you've gotten them all out.

The impulse to edit-as-you-go slows the writing process way down. It's amazing how much more productive you can be when you stop doing it.

This.

Editing as I write is always my downfall. I have to give myself permission to let whatever I write suck, and be out of order, and not make a lot of sense in some places. If I can't think of a name for something right of the bat I'll write (name of thing here) and keep going.

My writing has become a lot more productive, and I've found the editing process to be a lot more enjoyable when I'm just editing instead of trying to edit and write at the same time.

I'm the same way! If I edit as I go, then I wind up obsessing over one or two sentences, and pretty soon, an hour's gone by and I've barely written a paragraph.

The primary benefit of NaNoWriMo for me has long been the fact that it forces me to get out of my head and just write.

DA but this doesn't work for me and I've tried it a lot. I inevitably end up writing shit like "this is me writing yes I am writing look at me writing all these words oh god I can't even think I'm gonna go cry now".

What does work is when I have the time and space, going off by myself and just daydreaming and going through the story over and over in my head. Then I can sit down and type it up fairly quick. Unfortunately it takes a lot of time and effort to get my head into that "mode".

That's interesting! You're the first person I've come across for whom that hasn't worked. But, well, it's logical that not every method would work for everyone.

If you don't mind me asking, what sorts of things do you do to get yourself into that "mode?"

When the weather is nice (so, not for another few months), I go for walks in the woods. Sometimes I just pace around my room tossing a baseball around while I daydream. But I also need to not have any other distractions or responsibilities, and reading before I do it helps a lot too. I always feel inspired after doing a few hours of reading.

Stay away from the Internet. Turn off your modem if you have to, don't go to any wifi spot, just stay away. That'll reduce the distractions notoriously.

What I do during Nano is disconnect my internet, change my font to something I can't read (I use Hylian, but Wingdings will work fine), and just go. I'm not sure if it'll work for everyone, but it's worth a shot I suppose.

Re: Writer Advice

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
huh, that's a cool trick!

Re: Writer Advice

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever tried writing longhand? I ended up giving it a shot one year during NaNo, and now it's what I turn to whenever I'm having trouble throwing down a draft. It removes internet distractions entirely, and I find that I build up a nice kind of momentum when I'm moving my hand across the paper that I just don't get when typing.

Having to take an extra step to type everything up later sucks, but you can start doing some preliminary editing while you do that.
