Research question: US taxes

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Specifically New York. Is there a threshold amount of money you have to make before you're required to submit tax forms, or does everybody no matter how much they make?

Where I'm from, you don't have to even file until you make over X (I don't remember what the number is) thousand dollars a year, which is why I ask.

There's both federal and state taxes to consider.

For federal, efile.com says $10,300 is income threshold for paying taxes tor a single person under 65 who is not self-employed.

For NY state taxes, Google can help with that. You can probably download te whoke tax form.instruction book.

I can't speak for NY, but my experience in different states is that you don't have to file if you make under a certain amount a year. But filing is good if you think there is any change you'll get a refund. I almost didn't file this year, but it turns out that because I was a student for part of the year I'm getting 1000 back.

Look in the instructions for your state tax forms.

Very helpful considering I'm in Canada.

Here's the page of forms for NY full-year residents. I'm on mobile and not gonna try to download the pdfs to check for you, but it looks like the IT-201 instructions would be the place to start.

Okay, SPECIFICALLY NEW YORK STATE tax forms, then - which the anon above helpfully provided for you. In the future, the best place to find filing information is on official government sites (usually ending in a .gov) for the specific state in question. Those in Canada should still be able to access state tax forms for any state in the US, including New York. If you are unable to access the instructions or find the answer you are looking for, calling a state tax toll-free customer service line for assistance (if it is available for that state) may be beneficial. The website for New York is https://www.tax.ny.gov . If you were questioning Federal tax filing requirements, the website for that is irs.gov. Publication 17 and the Form 1040 instructions both have information about federal filing requirements. Both documents can be found online at irs.gov.

I don't know what type of research you are doing, so that's the most comprehensive answer I can give at this time. If this is personal research to determine your requirement to file US taxes, then more information would need to be provided in order to assist you properly. If this research is for something else, then the information provided should get you started down the right path.
