Reminds me of a pair of OCs I wrote as a teenager. They were supposed to have a ~complicated, torrid adult relationship~ but in practice they were just really childish and sucked at communicating, lol. I feel like there are a lot of traits like that, where an inexperienced writer will be trying to convey that someone is Flawed or Feisty or Emotionally Complex and it just comes across as a lot of selfish whining and makes the character unlikeable.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hence why OC's are a bad idea, Dani.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OCs are not a bad idea. You need OCs for plot fic. Badly written OCs are a product of inexperience, like poor pacing and hackneyed plots.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Few canons do not have a sufficient cast and previous characters for you to need an OC. OC's are pure ego stroking.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I take it you don't write episode style stories, crime stories or anything with a monster or guest character as problem of the week. If all you write is romance between cast characters then you rarely need OCs. For everything else, you really do.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You can always pull a monster from the back archive, or have a previous guest character return and tie up some of the inevitable loose ends from an episode. IME it is the romance stories that generally have more OC stand ins dragged in. If I never read another fic where a forty year old man suddenly falls in love with a sixteen year old in search of forbidden true love then I will be heartily glad.

Uh, huh. What a limited imagination you have, anon. I'll bet you were really good at coloring within the lines as a kid, but sucked at free art time.

You really ought to let go of that trauma.

DA

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But don't you understand? Those kids who were good at free art time? It was because they were egotistical! Free art is ego-striking How egotistical do you have to be to think you can create something yourself?!

Creating anything yourself is a sign of ego. We should all just be good little boys and girls and play with what far better creators have given us.

Why don't you tell all the authors in the world that characters are a bad idea and should not be written?

Yes all characters in original writing are a bad idea. No more characters that's bad writing. And poorly written characters by tweens are totally proof that all characters ever are bad.

This makes complete sense.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would Dani go anon for this? What AYRT said isn't even that bad, what a lame way to fan a grudge lmao

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Because by going anon, Dani, you try to create the illusion you have more support than you do.

If I agree with ayrt, does that make me Dani too?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Who the duece is Dani?

Signed, an anon who rarely pays attention to user ids.

[personal profile] dani_phantasma. I don't know her well, but she seems pretty inoffensive.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Okay. Thanks!

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol I'm not a named user. It was for an original story anyway. But ok, I'll go tell all the published authors they should probably stop cause 13-year-old me didn't know how to write relationships.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't mind them. They've been obsessively hounding this one user because she talked about OCs and wrote fics with them.

Stalkeranon even admitted once that they "just wanted [user] to stop writing fics with OCs". Because that's not the right way. The user didn't fall for it and the anon has been keeping it up ever since.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the backstory, anon. What a jerk stalker!anon is.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. It's also disturbing how long they're keeping this up.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
There is more than one. I didn't write a lot of the later stuff. She managed to pick up a couple of us jerks.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why though?

I don't get it? Is it really worth it harassing one person? Is this how you get your fun? A lot of people think you're creepy and a jerk so, you have that.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
When I did it it was because she kept flouncing away while swearing she was never coming back, it was fun to see how many flounces she could fit in one evening. Don't be the drama loving flouncer, they are fun to poke. After that, wasn't me. I'd guess it is because it still gets a reaction from the group. I'd guess if you want it to stop, then just stop responding to the folks that do it.

Sadly, OC-hating anon is one of the dullest, but douchiest anons on this community.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, there's only one person in the whole comm who writes OCs. Because all of us only write fanfic, never think about original fic, etc. If you're going to troll, at least try being clever.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right, and a lot of us have messed-up characters (either original characters or OOC canon characters in fanfic) in our pasts. You can't learn to write well without writing badly first.
