This reminds me of my problem with Brave, while I like female characters who have room to grow, I can tell they had real trouble making Merida likable and since the plot was a mess she didn't have a great growth period in the movie.

I still largely blame this on the fact that the film was taken from it's original director though.

I blame it on the stipulation that movies must take place over a single long weekend instead of giving characters time to breathe.

Yeah, same. I wanted to like Merida, but I felt that the movie never adequately addressed the fact that she was willing to poison her mother. That is NOT OKAY.

Her mother was an abusive piece of shit. Poison away, I say!

I feel like asking how old you are, but I suspect I know the answer.

Yeah I think there were some things that were understandable about Merida but then there were others where she just came off at best a bit bratty and in the case of her mother maybe even a sociopath?

If the movie had kept the concentration on her and her mother and really fleshed out Merida's personality and growth it may have worked a bit better, but the extra villain/action added took away a lot of the time for that.

i took it as merida being pretty navie and not even considering for that there could be something dangerous in the cake she gave her mother, rather than not caring that she could be poisoning her mother

Why should she have to be likeable?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't *have* to be likeable but I guarantee you that is what Disney/Pixar was aiming for and I know for a fact they struggled with it. Disney in particular wants likeable female leads because they want little kids to buy merchandise of their characters.

Fairly common requirement in the main character of a children's movie.
