Modern AUs, particularly fanart, in my fandom. It just ends up with the characters being in name only and doing stuff I don't think they'd actually do if they lived in our world.

Silmarillion, in this case specifically Melkor/Sauron. And I think you can make AUs work, though they aren't my cup of tea. There is this one AU where they are the heads of an evil corporation. That makes sense. But so many of the AUs have them as just your normal, average couple. And that doesn't work for me because even if they were normal humans living today they would be involved in things and be doing evil things.

Curious, how do you mean?

What in your opinion would be an example of a good modern AU, or a good reason for one?

Uh, well, in this case we're talking about Melkor/Sauron. And in most of the AUs, they're just a normal modern couple doing domestic things. If Melkor and Sauron were normal humans living today, they'd probably be involved in politics or something like that. There is this one AU where they are the heads of an evil corporation. That makes sense. But for them to just be a normal couple at that point you aren't really writing Melkor and Sauron.

There is a lot of AU art where they're wearing bad Christmas sweaters for some reason. I just don't get it.

Yeah I find that to be true of a lot of AU's. The characters are limited by the experiences of the author/artist
