Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
A grad school classmate is all over Facebook hawking her genetic-as-hell looking fantasy novel, complete with a mock up cover featuring the Game of Thrones font (or something close), "book one of the Whatever Kingdom series," and quotes from I guess friends on the cover praising the work.

What's making your cringe lately, friends?

genetic-as-hell

I assume you mean generic, but this made me chuckle a bit.

Still, yeah, that's quite cringeworthy.

But is she... self-published?

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So far, online entirely, and she plans to start shopping it out to publishers, I think?

I am a bad person, but I would totally get out the popcorn and watch that marketing campaign.

Way back in the spring of 2002, a few friends and I formed a "band." We had a single gig which consisted of playing half a song at a birthday party; we spent our "practice" sessions hanging out or driving aimlessly around town; and by fall, we had broken up. Nonetheless, we had a website, because it was 2002, and that's what you did: you made websites.

The other day, one of my former bandmates found our old website.

I have not stopped cringing since.

Is it weird that I find this story kind of adorable :p?

Seriously, though, I would probably have the same reaction as you if I were in your shoes.

I think that's cute. My friends and I were gonna write a movie (or possibly a musical or possibly an opera) and our "brainstorming" sessions were much the same as your practices. I still have a few of our notes and I just think they're funny as hell.

One friend (she's actually the friend I broke up with that I mentioned in the other thread) even wrote a musical theme for one of the characters, and I still think it's awesome. I occasionally goad her to play it when I see her now and we're somewhere with a piano.

Every time I hear about issues affecting "Men and Boys" I cringe. It's so fucking obvious. Oh, no-one cares about your lives, but people care about children? Why not pretend your issues are linked in and also affect children so people feel bad for you and want to help. Pa-fucking-thetic.

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Wat. You seriously think that there aren't issues that affect men and boys (yes most of this stems from toxic masculinity and feeds back from misogyny, but that doesn't mean they don't exist and shouldn't be stopped).

I had a friend on Facebook invite me to his "book launch party." The book was self-published online, and the "party" was....?? I honestly don't know. I did not accept the invite.

Ugh. I do kind of feel sorry for people who self pub and have to do all their own marketing and publicity. But they're usually pretty cringeworthy events, yes.

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Writing related: someone on F!S commented that self-publishing was the only option and I just cringed at what terrible and factually incorrect advice that was.

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Like, the only option ever?

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Who said that? Goodness gracious

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wow that's pretty incorrect.

Now granted I don't agree with the people who say that self publishing always sucks and is pathetic and desperate either. That's just another flavor of cringe.

That sounds like someone who doesn't know very much about publishing. Self publishing can be a very good option for many people, but it's not the ONLY option unless what you're writing is really, really niche.

When I'm browsing a tag for a fandom on tumblr and start to read a text post assuming it's someone's thoughts or meta, only to discover that no... it's a Character x Reader fic. Jeez, you could at least warn us!

Re: Cringe thewad

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
nothing makes me cringe like character x reader fic

"Oh someone in my face book feed is publishing a book! It's probably generic as hell and probably sucks and they're self publishing EW. I'm so embarrassed for them"

You know, people like that.

Do you even know this person and know for a fact that their writing sucks?

Modern AUs, particularly fanart, in my fandom. It just ends up with the characters being in name only and doing stuff I don't think they'd actually do if they lived in our world.

Someone telling my dog to sit over and over and over and over when the dog doesn't do it.

1. Sorry mate, but she only listens to me and maybe 2 others if she feels like it

2. Stop watering down the importance of that word, you're teaching her it's okay to ignore it stooop.
