Not just female, but meek/shy female characters in particular... Like, it's telling that, as far as MLP goes, it's always Fluttershy and never Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie (or hey, even Twilight).

People are headcanoning ponies with religion? That's just ... odd.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
headcanoning ponies as cultural minorities is more accurate, I think. I don't think religion really matters. I've never seen buddhist applejack or catholic rainbow dash. there's probably a jewish pony headcanon out there somewhere, though.

Twilight is usually stereotyped to black/Native/Desi, furthering the Magical Negro/Exotic Magic User tropes.

Reaching, or just plain trolling? Imagining her that way started because her name is Twilight, when it's dark out. It's not any deeper than that.

I don't have a problem with this. If it's a choice between having one pony fill in a race stereotype (and that's a stretch, pal) or having all the ponies be white girls in the suburbs, I will take option one. Diversity can't be perfect, but it must at least be interesting.

Same. Twilight isn't infalliable...I'd consider Zecora closer to a magical Negro than Twilight.

Eh...sorta. She just gives advice. And even she has basically said "lol, that's on you guys" a few times. Besides, she's mostly their font of info on teh forest, not really anything else.

Though, my reasoning for headcanoning Twilight as black is the plain thing of...her hair colors really look good against black skin...>_> Same with Celestia. It's that whole contrasting colors thing.

I do it with Rarity, too...no more thought than that.
and maybe that's bad, but idk.

I've seen a lot of Asian Twis.

I thought it was Fluttershy because her hair was the easiest to reimagine into a hijab when drawing a human version of her.

Might just be an MLP thing in that regard. I see Peridot from Steven Universe drawn with a hijab a lot, and she's... not meek or shy in any way.

Seriously, where are you seeing this? I want to post it to the Know Your Meme gallery for Steven Universe and see how many downvotes it gets.

I've seen it around on tumblr. Didn't save the pictures, but you can probably google for them?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's... kind of mean to submit someone's art to a gallery just because you want people to downvote it. :(

It was all over Tumblr a while ago, although that was kinda before we knew a lot about Peridot's personality. I think it was based on the fact that her hair is highly stylized in a way that's hard to figure out, so people started drawing it as a hijab instead. Then it became a trend.

Was still kinda weird to see posts like "if you don't think Peridot is a muslim amputee trans girl, I don't think we're watching the same series", since there weren't really such indications in the source material. (Not sure how Gems could be amputees anyway, considering their bodies are magic projections that regenerate if they get damaged).
