Huh, now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen a male character headcanoned as Muslim.

Methinks a lot of the supposedly "progressive" fans are the same type of bigoted hypocrites they claim to be against.

Yes, because male Muslims are scary and threatening to white men and women both in general terms but also there is the additional threat to women that Muslim men probably do not think about us the way we deserve. Where as a Muslim woman has actually overcome violence and oppression. If you want a Muslim to respect and admire in this day and age, it can be a man, but you will find it much easier to make her likable to make it a woman.

Well, a refugee did just stab a Refugee center worker to death in Sweden (following an increased amount of sexual assaults that have been repeatedly downplayed and covered up by Swedish police). So there might be a reason why male Muslims are viewed as scary.

It bugs me that people just put on a hijab and call it a day.

Like there's varying levels of practice in any religion and it's kinda silly that all these head canons are super devote.
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2016-01-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's an aesthetic. It's not about Islam, it's about pasting a hijab on and calling it diverse.
If she's not wearing a hijab, how will you know she's Muslim???

Not just female, but meek/shy female characters in particular... Like, it's telling that, as far as MLP goes, it's always Fluttershy and never Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie (or hey, even Twilight).

With MLP fandom in particular, Fluttershy is the character who gets headcanoned as everything. Seriously, Rainbow Dash and Spike get the trans headcanons (and sometimes Big Mac for irony points), Twilight Sparkle gets black headcanons that seem to be copy-pasted from Hermione Granger, Pinkie Pie gets headcanons related to mental disorders, and all the other headcanons go to Fluttershy. If anything, I think what it indicates is that the kind of folks who get into really tenuous headcanons are the same kind of folks who identify with a character who's shy and timid.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Headcanoned by who? You? (Not me.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because, for a Muslim headcanon for a girl, you can just slap a hijab on the character and call yourself progressive, no matter what other clothing you put her in. To headcanon a male character as Muslim, you have to put a little more work into it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
wait, judging by the other comments, is this supposed to be Fluttershy? How is it possible to headcanon a character as Muslim in a world where the creation story is literal and involves magical princess ponies..? It's so weird to see people use "headcanon" as "the thing I like", I always thought it meant a personal interpretation that could be possible, even if was farfetched, within the context of the canon. This is not possible with the canon.

I hadn't noticed this specifically, but I did notice that internet social progressiveness blatantly ignores non-white men. Of course, any mention of this is an invitation to have a radfem unit harassing you so maybe that's why people don't point it out that often... at least I'd like to believe that's why.

I have a few personal headcanons that don't fit in this category

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I headcanon humanized!Toriel, Asgore and Asriel as Muslim and Middle easternern but I only really see Muslim!Toriel

I have definitely noticed this. There's some fandoms like Assassin's Creed where you'll see people headcanon male characters as Muslim, but by and large it's the girls who get this treatment.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I always like seeing fanart like that, but now that you mention it... Kanaya gets also headcanoned as muslim and she is one of the more motherly and "shy" characters

Huh, I never noticed until this post, but I think you are right

I'm not sure I've seen any male characters headcanoned as Muslim

I wonder why that is :o

In any case, I'll try to remember this in the future when I'm headcaning (headcanoning?) characters

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Just throwing this out there but from my head canon the whole Moon Family of Princess Serenity was following some sort of proto-islam and Serenity's dad probably looked like a sheikh. Also Mamo-chan would be great as a muslim.
