What's the point of writing things you don't enjoy writing, purely in order to make a point to an audience that never gave a shit, then getting indignant they still don't give a shit they never gave?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This reminded me of all the SJW issues fic where they write the fic in order to make a point then get all angry when people ignore it or aren't immediately converted.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I was enjoying it just fine before people missed the point????

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Fiction is for entertaining. If you want to drill a point into people's heads, write critical essays, and label them as such, instead of trying to hide your point in porn.

You could label a fic as having "submissive top [whoever]" and "dominant bottom [whoever]"

or you could stop being pretentious and insisting people JUST DON'T GET IT - maybe people who got it didn't review?

If the theme/symbolism/point/whatever goes over their heads, try putting it in your author's notes at the top of the fic on the first chapter. Maybe they'll get it if you tell them ahead of time so they're on the lookout for that interpretation/theme.

I mean, do they not get it or do they just not like it? There was a time when I was really into yaoi and I was strict about liking the whole "uke=sweet and delicate, seme=strong and protective" formula and didn't like anything that strayed from it, to the point that I would find things to nit-pick and criticize if the author portrayed a pairing any other way (yeah, I was an oblivious asshole with shitty, narrow tastes).

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're just a bad writer?

OP, one thing to learn about writing:

Readers will always have their own interpretations of a story, so no matter what your intentions are, there will always be those who come up with some really crazy shit.

You cannot force someone to get the point. Others will see the point and ignore it in favor of their own narrative. Heck, we get arguments here on F!S about headcanons all the time.

You just have to let it go, and be happy if someone actually gets what you were going for. Be much more prepared for "the point" to be missed on a regular basis.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Could you please explain how you know your readers didn't "get" your story?

Most comments I get on my fic are of the "I enjoyed this!" nature, so I have no way of knowing if my readers are getting any particular point I'm writing. I'm confused what kind of reader feedback you're getting that makes you feel misunderstood.

People don't read fic to be taught a lesson. They read it for fun and to relax.

Maybe stop using fic as your soap box.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really understand what you were trying to prove OP, but if you wanted to teach people a lesson than just say something in the authors notes. It sounds really inconsiderate of you to just expect people to react to something the way you want them to. Especially when lots of people who read fics are usually trying to be polite and don't question if the author decides to take a different, darker or abusive approach to writing relationships.

You seen to have a low opinion of your readers, but you only have yourself to blame because you sound passive aggressive and you're trying to take it out in the wrong way. Fanfiction is supposed to be for fun and people go into it with that mindset. For a lot of people it's the part of the day they set aside to chill and relax. So don't blame others for not getting your stupid lesson.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
If your audience doesn't get the message you were trying to communicate, then I'm sorry but a great deal of that responsibility falls upon you, because crafting the message was your job, not theirs. That said, maybe the fact that people generally consume fanfic for entertainment and not to learn lessons meant that your goal wasn't feasible in the first place.

You sound rather impatient that your readers weren't picking up the pearls of wisdom you were generously casting before them. I doubt that makes for a very compelling story, and I'm not surprised it didn't work.

Do the opposite and watch people do mental gymnastics to try and find a deeper meaning to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i don't get it. sounds hot though

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If absolutely everyone outside of your personal circle is missing the point, the problem isn't with them. The problem is with how you're making your point.

(And quite possibly with the point itself, but that's neither here nor there.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
OP probably wrote the characters so OOC in order to force the issue upon them that it confused their readers.

But as others have said, fic isn't your personal soapbox, so stop.
