Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
What's the most obvious and worst issue-fic you've ever read?

Mine was that famous one where one of the characters pauses in the middle of the fic to explain to another what a demisexual is.

Ah! I had one like that with Steve Rogers. Like, it wasn't even some weird modern AU. Steve was telling (Bucky I think) about how he was demisexual and explaining what it was.

I back buttoned out because it was so weird.

Disabled person going to Hogwarts and having to educate the professors on wheelchair accessibility.

But. Magic. And flight. And. What

Well, 11-year olds don't have very powerful magic. Levitating yourself around all day might be beyond a first-year.

They'd probably need to have an exception made for them if they wanted to use a broom or a flying carpet to get around instead. There's no way kids are allowed to fly broomsticks through the halls to classes. But I could see where a lot of people wouldn't want to switch to those in the first place.

Summon the lambs to slaughter?

Or a different one?

That one where Rocket the Raccoon explains Groot's pronouns.

Probably any of the five million 'Character gets Religion and their life gains Meaning' fics out there.

That is a thing?? What fandom is this? I've seen some fics that address a character's religion but never one about a character finding religion.

The characters (two grown men) started talking about triggers and gaslighting.

Re: Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
What characters were these? Because depending on the setting and period, that could fit. Cops, psychologists, several types of people who've had contact with abuse, some professional cons and frauds, anyone who's had contact with PTSD, there are several types of character and setting where that could be just fine.

The one where Solid Snake lectures some evil homophobic passersby to leave him and Otacon the couple alone and something about AIDS? It's been a long time.

lmao, this sounds hilarious.

Re: Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, Waiting To Be Loved! I'd almost forgotten about that. That's the one where Otacon thinks he has AIDS and jumps off a bridge, I just remember people pointing out that 1) you'd have to run a really, really long way to get to a bridge from where he was and 2) that river is filthy.

Re: Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Came across a story once where someone used the characters to spout their extremely pro-life views. And they also spouted a bunch of ignorant and flat out false stuff about the abortion issue on top of it, which made it all the more cringeworthy (not to mention didn't exactly help their side of the argument).

My Little Pony fanfic where Rainbow Dash learns she's asexual and that's okay. I think it was one of those fics where every one of the Mane Six has a different orientation, but I didn't last long enough to be certain. It was so earnest and accepting that I wasn't even that annoyed, but I'd never rec it over more subtle works.

Can't think of one, but I'm dying to write one where Snape lectures Gryffindors on bullying.

Re: Issue-fic

I have seen far too many awful issue-fics with Tony Stark (expert on trauma, sexuality, gender and political correctness), the Avenger who is always there to call out others when they are being ~insensitive~

Re: Issue-fic

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-01-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
That would be the fic someone wrote for me based on a request in a prompt fest. I requested Lily's reaction to Snape in the afterlife after finding out that he bullied Harry. What I got was James and Lily apologizing to Snape and grovelling at his feet (including Lily apologizing for "abandoning him"). It was like the writer was purposefully twisting my request, and it honestly seemed like they were intentionally being nasty because my request wasn't pro-Snape.

I tend to avoid issue fics, so I haven't seen any of the particularly bad ones.

Oh, and once, in an otherwise good fic, Hermione gave a lecture on the idea that a woman not taking her husbands name just didn't love him enough.

Actual published fiction.

Protagonist introduces himself and goes into a chapter-long rant about unfair divorce laws. Two chapters later, he's complaining about the tax code.

Many, many, MANY moons ago, I encountered a fic--actually, more than once!--where Snape lectured others on nurturing self-esteem in children and bullying. Once with the help of his good friend Luna Lovegood.

Considering a secret today this is very hilarious.

Re: Issue-fic

I read a Jean/Marco fic where Marco used "they/them" pronouns, and he started crying when someone referred to him as "he," so Jean had to go comfort him.

Re: Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
That really popular fic about Steve Rogers' publicist that turned Steve Rogers into the perfect unproblematic progressive whose beliefs 110% align with 21st century social justice ideals.

I wholeheartedly agree that Steve Rogers would have progressive leanings, but JFC he's still a white dude who grew up in the 1940s. It's absurd to think he's instantly going to have a highly nuanced understanding of issues regarding race, gender, sexuality, etc, especially given how much has happened since the 1940s regarding those topics.

Re: Issue-fic

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh GOD, I remember that one! It had a couple good bits, but holy SHIT was its notion of Steve's progressivism wrong. You DO NOT come straight from Mr. Smith Goes To Washington to casually considering the Boy Scouts evil, and his "HOW much does college cost these days?" is absolute fucking gibberish coming from a pre-GI-Bill Brooklyn kid.

He might well want the Scouts to be more inclusive, but he'd frame it in terms of a good organization not doing all the good it can do, and he would shit square nickels when the current tax structure was outlined for him, naturally, but goddamn.
