I think refusing to vaccinate your children should be considered child abuse, specifically medical neglect. I don't necessarily think your kids should be taken from you, but I don't really know what I would recommend either, other than education?

I think of abuse as different from neglect but otherwise yeah I agree. Unless your child *can't* be vaccinated (allergy to vaccine ingredients, chemotherapy/otherwise immunocompromised, etc.) they should be as routine medical care and not doing it should be considered failing to provide medical care.

Yeah, I understand that some people can't be vaccinated for various reasons, which is all the more reason to build up herd immunity.

Where I live, neglect is under the 'abuse' umbrella and can in fact have your kids removed by child services.

In that case yeah, I agree completely.

People are also allowed to withhold medical care of other types if their objection is religious. Personally I think, even as a religious person, that we hold religion up above even basic human rights and that people are allowed way too much leeway to get out of things by claiming religion. But anyway, there is precedent for parents to be able to withhold medical care.

I honestly also think we hold parental rights too high even when they interfere with the child's rights as well. In a lot of family law the parents right to do what they want comes before the child's rights and I really hate it.

I think if you want to abstain from things or do certain things related to religion AS AN ADULT, more power to you. I do NOT think you should be able to withold or demand things of your child, who is too young to understand or agree with you. (ie, withholding medical care or circumcision).

I think there was actually a case a few years ago where a child died of cancer because their parents withheld medical care with the belief that god would answer their prayers and heal the child. ButI am not sure so take that with a grain of salt.

yes, that did happen, in a small town near where I grew up. It was very much front page news in the state and yes, the parents did get jailed for it. I want to say it was around 5 years ago now, but I don't remember their names to google.

That's my point. People think their religion trumps others' rights. No it doesn't. Whether that person is another adult or another child you don't have the right to withhold medical care from them(or force them into something that damages their body). Your choices aren't theirs.

Circumcision of minors should be banned.

AYRT

Completely agreed. Did you see the big custody battle that went on because the mother fled rather than allow her son to be circumcised?

Are you talking about parents that choose to have their sons circumcised? It isn't your business. Just mind your own son's penis.

Why is this different to you than other forms of not providing adequate medical care? Or, more accurately, why would this be different to you than cutting off another part of an infant's body?

omg CIRCUMCISION. I dunno why I didn't think of that one when I replied to Philstar. aaaargh. you don't get to cut up parts of your kid's genitals because you think they'll thank you later.

ETA: except obviously you do. in some places. like the USA. I keep hoping that changes really, really soon. nobody's even making an issue of it right now. :(

I also agree completely with your comment. :(

It really pisses me off when I hear horror stories of kids who died or were permanently disabled or were sick for an inordinately long time because their parents thought modern medicine was a sin or something like that. Usually in the horror stories the parents are prosecuted, but I know they're able to get away with "smaller" thing (like vaccinations, health education, probably other stuff) on the grounds of religion.

Totally agreed about parental rights too. People who yell about parental rights kind of creep me out because it feels as though they think their kid is their property.

Legally speaking, neglect constitutes a form of abuse.

Fair enough then.
