Could be worse, could be happening with the Suicide Squad. A bunch of idiots not even doing minimal research about the female characters they are freaking out over.

New fans are awesome, new fans who want to tell you all about a character they know nothing about is not.

And this is why the new people saying the dumbest things about Rey in the Star Wars fandom need to sit down and shut up.

TFA is their first Star Wars film and they like to blather on about things that DON'T make sense, like they know what they're talking about amirite?, in the grand scheme of the saga because they have yet to watch the other 6 films.

So yeah, new fans who want to learn are great. New fans who suddenly think they know everything without the research behind it are assholes who need to shut the fuck up.

Which history are you gatekeeping here? The original one with the WWII ties and the kinkiness snuck into its panels by Marston?

The jump-suit kung-fu spy princess with her lover, Steve?

Hippolyta's daughter, when she was truly a Wonder made of clay?

The dozens of other variants?

Or New 52, which frankly kinda sucks?

Look, sometimes characters and their iconography become part of a more generalized pop culture atmosphere, and if simply loving the idea of 'Wonder Woman' *without* getting bogged down in the minutiae of decades of retconned weirdness makes someone a bad fan.... too fucking bad they're having fun that's not by your rules.

It doesn't matter.

People can love what they love on their own terms.

Chill.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh look, it's the GATEKEEPING BOGEYMAN kneejerk response to anything remotely negative about new fans.

There's a difference between gatekeeping and being annoyed at people who have at the most read a wiki article on the character playing "OMG you did the character wrong" gatekeepers when it comes to the movie adaption.

All I know abut Wonder Woman is that her pants are to be darkened. I need know no more.

Heh. Wonder Woman is a bit like Robin Hood, in that there are a lot of versions. If/when DC and the Marston heirs ever surrender it to the public domain, we could easily see several contradictory versions running at the same time.

Wait, actually, I think there are a few contradictory versions being published by DC & WB right now! There's the Finches' development of AzzWondy in the main book; Grant Morrison's reinterpreted Wondy; Renae De Liz's Legend of Wonder Woman; and the live-action cinematic universe. Any animated Wondy will be different from all four.

It's terrible, isn't it?

Is there actually a Wonder Woman fandom?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-01-31 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm serious. There's an endless fandom for the idea of Wonder Woman, but is there actually a fandom for the character's history, stories, allies, enemies, etc?

Re: Is there actually a Wonder Woman fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But the idea is so much more interesting that the BOOORING reality, so deal and get it.

There is for the DCAU version, I know that much.

Re: Is there actually a Wonder Woman fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a fandom. It's DC fandom. And Wondy is far from the only awesome woman involved.

Re: Is there actually a Wonder Woman fandom?

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-01-31 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course.

It largely folds into DC fandom, which has been in a bad way since "Flashpoint" and the company that owns the trademarks basically spitting on the fandom and running away.

Batman fandom is a bigger component of DC fandom, but Wondy definitely has her own fandom.

That said, Wondy's canon has been mangled so many times that Wondy fandom does tend to be a little weird. It's less about a particular continuity than most fandoms, I think, as weird as that sounds.

TBH this is true for a lot of high profile superheroes. More people "like" them than people who actually are into the media.

I remember having an irrational rage towards someone's character redesign that was all about desexualizing her which, cool, but it took away the lasso of truth with the tone that that useless uncool weapon was "all about bondage undertones." TBF I vaguely remember this person was pretty upfront about having never been much of a fan, but that was the first thing I thought of: people stripping away what the character stands for and making her more generic in the cause of resisting her objectification. Fucking yawn.

I only know Wonder Woman via the 1975 television series. That series was so much fun and I loved Lynda Carter.

You know who else I've seen this happen with on tumblr? Famous feminists. I'm not joking. I once saw a many-thousand notes post basically being like "it's appalling that people want to voice their opinion on the movement without having read any of these writers," and proceeded to, among much else, spell bell hooks's name with capitals. Which, like, if the OP had read her they'd presumably know not to do.

Same with politicians. Remember the Hillary idolatry, and now the Bernie is a perfect cinnamon roll...ism?

Not saying that people need to be super educated on X to enter Y discussion or Z fandom, just that tumblr/that culture on the whole blindly idolizes various figures without questioning or even knowing much about them. And it's frustrating.

nightscale: Princess of my heart (DC: Wonder Woman)

[personal profile] nightscale 2016-01-31 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with liking a character like this though, sometimes I like characters just because I find them cool and there's no further depth than that.

But I guess if you've got someone telling you how the character is supposed to be and they're using incorrect information that would be annoying.

This is one of the many reasons I avoid Tumblr fandom. I grew up with Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman. I was just a little kid and she was my first hero. I wore out the Halloween costume I had of WW. She taught me so much. I could be smart, brave, powerful, and most important that even though I was a girl I could be the hero and save the day. I didn't need a man to rescue me because Wonder Woman saved herself. If she could do it then I could do it. I still love her for that.

You're right. I'm not going to bother to learn her history, because I'm not deeply invested in her. I just think she's cool, and I like a lot of the art and mini comics people make about her. Fortunately for me, the secret police force that governs the world of comics fandom and appropriate methods of fan appreciation hasn't caught onto me yet.

I'll tell you what I like about Wonder Woman:

...the various levels of lesbian/bisexual text and subtext. Not as a "Ooh that's sexy, thing." but rather as a "That's a fucking awesome thing to be in a comic because it's not an Ooh that's sexy thing."

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel for you OP. I mean wonder woman is pretty much the first thing people think about when saying female superhero. And most other superheroes that are on her level of popularity are either second fiddle too a man or a genderswapped version of a male hero and therefore not tumblr friendly. But since she doesn't have a movie people just don't know what she does. And the DC movies are so terrible that this isn't changing soon.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I guess it's a good thing they're giving Wonder Woman her own movie with her origin story.

Can I just like her because of the invisible jet and magic lasso?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I like that she's a female superhero, but I'm cool with just knowing the fuzzy, half-remembered backstory that I do and liking her kicking ass and using her awesome accoutrements. Of course, I'm not on tumblr, or all that vocal about any of this, so maybe you don't care either way.
