I FEEL YOUR PAIN. The Star Trek reboots are not at ALL what they should have been. I'm so frustrated.
Though tbh, I wasn't that wowed by Star Wars - but I think it's a much better effort than Star Trek :( Maybe the new TV show will be decent?

It helps that TFA was written by Kasdan, who also wrote Empire and Jedi.

I feel that way about...quite a lot of stuff last year. Yay star wars, but.....everyone else got kind of left behind if your name wasn't Mad Max.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be THAT PERSON and point out that TFA isn't a reboot. :P

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. It's a remake.

I disagree that the Star Trek movies sucked.

I love both SW and ST so I'm pretty happy just enjoying all the new stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The first ST movie was fun for me and has a special spot as a super rewatchable background film. The second... Eh, it could have been worse.

Neither have what really makes Star Trek special, but each of the formal series have their own niche. The retcon films are all about busting blocks and that's okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, the Star Trek sequel sucked, but how come everyone's suddenly turning on the 2009 version when practically everyone (including its fandom) was kissing its ass when it first came out?????? It's just like The Avengers films: every person glorifies the original for so long until the sequel comes out, and then both films are trash? What the *fuck* is that about?!

And now it's just a matter of time until Star Wars gets its sequel in 2017, and aaaaaall these fanboys and fangirls can cry about how shitty TFA is and move on to some other geeky fandom. So fucking predictable.

+1

Ultron made me FEEL like I didn't like the Avengers, but I will admit that that's not true

I call it "retroactive dislike." There's probably a better term. Because, yeah, I liked the first ST movie when I came out, but my dislike of the sequel in turn made me dislike the first film.

Eh. Even at the time, I thought the ST reboot was a decent action flick, but it didn't feel like Star Trek to me. So as generic SF action movie, I give it a thumbs up. As a ST reboot... nah.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Into Darkness sucked so much that it made 09 look worse.

That's a serious answer. Into Darkness was really really fucking bad, and it made a lot of the problems with 09, which got papered over by the charm of the cast, much more difficult to ignore.

God, Into Darkness was bad.

I think the first movies are all shiny and full of potential, but then in the second you see that the potential isn't going anywhere and start disliking both.

Its actually the same affect with the Star Wars prequels. There was a lot more positivism at the time and then the hatred grew to the point it was the general consensus in the fandom.

I feel like Star Wars was a more passionate attempt at reconnecting with the originals. I do like the Star Trek reboots, especially the first, but I have to kinda separate them from the originals in order to appreciate them. TFA can be appreciated with the originals still in mind.

You should just be like me and gleefully jump ships now that Star Wars is finally appealing!

One thing Trek has going for it is that you can't be a Trekkie without having at least some love of the cheesy screenplays that just didn't quite work. For a long time we had the odd-numbered movie rule.

I liked ST reboots. Haven't watched SW yet because I like only one SW movie so not a big SW fan.

Well, I liked Star Trek '09. I still do. It may not be Star Trek exactly, but that ending and everything felt like a step in teh right direction to becoming Star Trek. It was hopeful, even in the wake of Vulcan being gone.

STID...well, I like parts of it. Namely anything to do with Scotty. And teh few scenes we got with Bones. :C And Uhura being the badass multi-lingual lady that she is and facing the Klingons down the way she did, despite the danger. Everything else was a mess.

It's why I have some slightly higher hopes that Star Trek Beyond will be better. Not very high, obviously, but higher.

And I pretty much love the entirety of the Star Wars Saga, so.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The Star Trek reboot is what happens when someone who's heard a lot about Star Trek, but was never really that into it, makes a Star Trek movie. So you get sloppy Clif Notes versions of all the characters that manage to miss the point of most* of them. And you get a story that checks all the right boxes, but ends up feeling hollow. And honestly, they weren't bad movies. Hell, they aren't even the worst Star Trek movies. But they captured the spirit of Star Trek far less than, say, Galaxy Quest.

*Scotty is love.

I definitely had similar thoughts (even though I'll always love the '09 movie).

JJ's not a Trekkie, by his own admission. It's a shame.

JJ had help, not to mention that he's a big Star Wars fan to begin with and knew almost nothing of importance about Star Trek which is a shame, because he's not a bad director.

Yeah those movies were fun, but definitely not Star Trek.
