Cairn Terriers/Puppies in general

[personal profile] loracarol 2016-02-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm going over to my coworker's house to walk her 7 m.o. cairn terrier puppy.

...She's kind of a brat. In a cute, puppy way, but still a brat, which is really bothering my coworker (an older lady), since apparently none of her other four cairn's acted like this.

I want to work with her, while I'm walking her, to help this lady out (I was just agreeing to do so because PUPPY! !!!!), but does anyone have any tips/suggestions?

I've only gone over once, so far, and at the advice of the lady's neighbor, every time the puppy starts pulling one way, I start moving in a different/random direction, at different speeds, so that the pup has to look to/at me to see where to go next, vs. going her own way.

Is there anything else I can do?

Is she really pulling hard? I learned recently that a good way to get a dog to stop pulling is to just stop walking when she does this. It teaches her that pulling won't get her anywhere, whereas waiting for your direction will get her a walk. I haven't done it myself though, and like a lot of training, it takes a long time to work.

I'm not sure? I know that's a silly way to put it, but she's so young, that I can't tell if she's pulling hard- for her- and it just doesn't feel hard because baby, or if she's not pulling that hard, and could pull harder.

I'll also try the not walking thing. :)

Well, you do the same thing you would do with any dog learning to walk on a leash- keep a short leash so they're forced to be at your side and stop walking if they start pulling away too badly.

Of course, be careful that the pup isn't stopping because it needs to do its business. Pulling it away from that will just teach it that pooping isn't allowed to happen during walks, which is the exact opposite of what it should be learning.

Also, don't be That Person- bring a baggie for the poop.

Her leash is a couple feet, five, I think, should it be shorter?

Oh no, she isn't - according to her owners, she has a bathroom place out in the backyard, and she doesn't go potty when she's just on walks for fun (she has unlimited backyard access).

I had a baggy, just in case. :)

It should be about as short as the distance from your waist to comfortable walking height for the dog, held in both hands (the one nearest the dog holds just the leash for corrections, and the other holds whatever extra length you have). This image demonstrates a good training posture:

Give all the praise and treats when puppy isn't pulling it is next to you in addition to changing direction or not moving. Teaches it that not pulling and being near you is good fun. Slowly phase out the rewards as it becomes habit.

I'm going to ask her owner if I can take some treats with me this time. :)
