Obscure Movies You Love Because of the Cast

Now I'm on a Kiefer Sutherland memory lane trip, and remember a weird movie where he plays an FBI agent whose hippie dad was Dennis Hopper. Such an odd little movie, but I watched the hell out of it. It was called Flashback.

Do you have any movies like that, F!Sers?

Lone Star State of Mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1YZbyQt1xw It is fucking hilarious and I am so mad more people don't know about it. The stupid trailer does not help. But it has Ryan Hurst and DJ Qualls, who I love.

Oh my god. Does it seriously have John Cougar Mellencamp in it? It looks like it has John Cougar Mellencamp in it.

I'm of the opinion that this weird, obscure movie is worth watching solely for Harvey Keitel playing a Zorro knockoff. I'd probably love it anyway even if it didn't have Harvey Keitel, but his presence is a wonderful bonus that adds a lot to it.

The description on IMDB sounds fantastic:

A young boy imagines being in a tale he's about to hear. In this magical world he encounters many famous characters from other tales, aliens and other beings and, of course, a beautiful princess.

I've always had a soft spot for Ray Liotta, Whoopie Goldberg, and Tina Majorino, because I really loved them in the movie Corrina Corrina.

Oh, I am a sucker for late-80s early-90s Whoopi Goldberg films. Why did she ever get away from doing weird buddy films and go all pundit-y?!

ginainthekingsroad: Oscar & Lucinda at the porthole- "I have gambled for pleasure..." (Oscar & Lucinda- porthole)

Ooh, the answer is absolutely Impromptu for me! Years ago, my mom and I went to Blockbuster (lol) to rent something new and popular. Maybe it was XMen 2. Well they didn't have it, because it had just come out on dvd like 2 days ago. So we wandered around the store, and found that. James Lapine, doing crazy things with Romantic composers and writers? With Judy Davis, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters?!

We similarly found Oscar & Lucinda by wandering at Blockbuster, circa 2006. And it became one of my favorite movies (it's my icon here), and I read and loved the novel it's based on as well. Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, and Ciaran Hinds are the leads.

Those both look great, but the synopsis of Oscar & Lucinda especially has me wanting to watch it. The young priest who's an inveterate gambler and tries to move a glass church to Australia? I'm in.

I just watched Vampire Academy over the weekend and that is now one of my forever favorites, solely because the cast is so wonderful. It's not a good movie, but Zoey Deutch completely sells it, and the supporting cast was funny (Sarah Hyland especially) and everyone understood the tone of it.

(also, on a separate note, I liked that the "WOE, our tragic vampire love can never be" trope was for actually understandable reasons (the love interest is mid-20s, she's 17, and he's an instructor at the school, and I was like "yeah, it's probably good that y'all not hook up yet"))

I'm so disappointed that movie didn't well, because the actors for Rose and Christian were absolutely perfect and I wanted to see their snarky adventures in the second one, dammit!

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

It's the film that Heath Ledger was filming when he died, so Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell filled in and it's directed by Terry Gilliam so it's a super trippy movie.

I loved that movie. I adore that kind of surreal atmosphere in general and the movie did a wonderful job with it.

Dominick & Eugene--Ray Liotta and Tom Hulce (whom I absolutely adore. It's about twin brothers, Dominick (Hulce)has an intellectual disability due to an "accident" in his youth, while Eugene is trying to become a doctor.

Not sure if it counts as obscure, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't blockbuster--Thunderheart. I adore Val Kilmer and Graham Greene in this movie--and the supporting cast are pretty good too.

Oh they both look very interesting! I'm always on the lookout for good late 80s/early 90s movies. I don't know why, there's just something about that era that appeals to me.

Desk Set. Tracy and Hepburn obviously in love, with a script written for them to geek out on each other.

Phone Booth is awesome. I love claustrophobic movies like that.
