Of course the authors saw your comment. Maybe they didn't have anything to add or didn't know how to reply. Readers are so fucking entitled. WAAH THEY DIDN'T READ MY COMMENT! WAAH! THEY DIDN'T UPDATE WHEN I WANTED THEM TO! Grow up. You act like they should be praising you on their hands and knees for gracing them with your holy comments. Please.

You're such a sunshine and completely right! When people talk to you, they should be ready to be ignored because otherwise they'd be so entitled. /s

I miss when politeness was a thing and when fandom used to be... something that united fans, but now anything is answered with an accusation because people keep assuming the worst.

FUCKING. ENTITLED. SNOWFLAKES.

It's honestly disgusting. The author took hours, possibly days, possibly weeks, possibly even months, putting together a chapter or story for readers. And readers can't even be bothered to take thirty seconds of their oh-so precious time to leave a quick note of appreciation. And apparently when they do, they feel as if the author then owes them for doing so.

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, come on, stop overeating.

You don't know what kind of comments they are sending, it could be long-ish ones and they feel there's no point to do so if it's going to be a one way communication, so they stick to the... one way communication known as kudos.

And if they still send their appreciation to the author, what else do you want? Being worshiped with ~comments~ 'cause the readers should be eternally grateful of being blessed with the honor of reading a fic and kudos are not enough? And the readers are the entitles ones? Really?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
But how is me leaving a comment of just "Thanks! I enjoyed it!" different from leaving kudos? If I have something more in-depth to say, like a part really touched me or I loved a turn of phrase, I'll leave a comment. Otherwise I just hit kudos, because I feel that is a way to show the author I appreciated their effort and enjoyed the story and an "I enjoyed it!" comment would be redundant.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
And that's fine.

What isn't fine is demanding a response when you do comment, as though you're doing the author a favour by commenting when a comment's essentially a thank-you for something the author gave the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ask a dozen authors which they’d prefer more—kudos or comments—and I promise you, most of them will say comments.

Kudos are lazy.

Imagine spending days/weeks/months/years on a painting and then finally displaying it to the world. You set it up and take a seat next to it and wait in anticipation. To your excitement lots of people stop to look at it and you’re literally waiting at the edge of your seat for comments that just…never come. Everyone just pauses, nods at the painting, and walks away without a word.

That’s what a kudos is.

I know several people who leave kudos on fics they didn’t enjoy simply because they felt obligated to. When I leave kudos and only kudos, I’m basically saying, “This fic was alright; at the very least I appreciate the effort the author put in.” I reserve comments for the fics I enjoy because it’s my way of thanking the author and showing my appreciation.

I don’t care if the author responds to my comment or not. I don’t write them because I want to be acknowledged or require some response. I write them because they create something that brought me joy and I want to do something nice for them in turn. Even if all I have to say is, “This was great! Thanks!” I’ll leave it because I know most readers won’t even do that much and honestly, it’s the very, very least I could do.

You know what's lazy? Not saying "thanks, glad you enjoyed it!" in response to a comment.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
How so? Does it take an hour? Does it require too much hard work?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it does take an hour when you're a semi-popular or popular writer who receives a shit load of reviews. It takes me at least that long to reply to all my reviews for one fic/chapter sometimes, sometimes longer. I enjoy doing it so I don't mind, but authors shouldn't have to feel obligated to respond to each and every review, especially since most comments consist of standard praise such as "this was great! thank you!" or "nice fic." To expect authors to do thank readers for thanking them is the worst type of entitlement.

The problems of being popular!

LOL humblebrag. #BNFproblems

If you hate kudos so much don't post on AO3 and don't post either on Tumblr or facebook, since likes works in the same way.

No one in fandom has to give you the recognition you want so much in the way you want to receive it, so either create a private journal and give access only to the people who deserves it comment or accept not everyone will do what you want.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I withhold chapters, actually, not that I let my readers know this.

I flat out won't update unless I'm given a certain number of reviews. Once I reach that number, I update. And if it takes months to get there, so be it.

If readers can't be bothered to leave a 10 word comment, I can't be bothered to revise, edit, format, and publish a 10,000 word chapter.

I don't have to share what I write. But I do. If I can't get "recognition in the way I want to receive it" then I won't update. Simple as that. It's not as if I'm asking you to pull out your bank cards and wire me money, or send me your valuables. I'm asking that you take a minute to tell me whether or not you enjoyed the story. Apparently that's too much to ask, though, and I'm a selfish, selfish person for doing so.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, readers owe you a comment — a comment that surpasses the minimum length requirement!

But readers are the only entitled ones, because taking a minute to tell you they liked a story in a way you don't like (or in less than ten words!) is worthless.

Honestly, you're probably doing the right thing by no updating. Enjoy your drawer fics and keep hating all those evil readers who sent kudos in the past for not appreciating you enough.

Uh, no. shortysc22 hit the nail up thread.

It's the interactive part which is the main point here. I'm not asking for anything from the author when I leave a comment, but there's a big difference between interacting with a fellow fan and the nothingness of talking to a void and hoping for the best.

If there isn't going to be any interaction, I prefer to send kudos.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Which means you are, in fact, asking something of the author.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Reading comprehension, you don't have it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
(ayrt)
We may come from far too different fandom cultures to understand each other if you really think that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Go back to Tumblr, Bettydays. Also, sorry your work sucks so much that nobody will leave comments on it. ;__;
