Eh, it can be a little bit of both. I think there is some misogyny in it, for sure.

I think a lot of the time it is being forced to justify a slash ship, though - slashers are used to being defensive and having their interests questioned, so you end up having to come up with a whole slew of reasons to defend your interests, and some end up being misogynistic.

But yeah, I've seen male characters demonized from time to time for getting in the way of a ship. Not all the time, but it happens. So "getting in the way of the ship" is definitely a factor.
