I think these criticisms are largely exaggerated. I don't believe any of these women - mostly teen girls, let's be real - have internalized misogyny. I think they want their sexy boy/boy ships to happen and hate the competition (usually female love interests) in the typical teenage fashion - overdramatic KILL IT WITH FIRE reactions. And you know what, that's fine, it's just fandom and their opinions on geeky media don't automatically reflect their life views.

+1

Finally someone said it.

Sometimes you just dislike a character. As long as people disliking a chertain character don't go around attacking fans of the characters for liking them or start shipwars with the rival ship I couldn't care less who they like or hate.

Na
"go around attacking fans of the characters for liking them or start shipwars with the rival ship"

Which is exactly what these people do, duh, that's why they are noticed. I doubt ppl like OP would care otherwise.

Eh, it can be a little bit of both. I think there is some misogyny in it, for sure.

I think a lot of the time it is being forced to justify a slash ship, though - slashers are used to being defensive and having their interests questioned, so you end up having to come up with a whole slew of reasons to defend your interests, and some end up being misogynistic.

But yeah, I've seen male characters demonized from time to time for getting in the way of a ship. Not all the time, but it happens. So "getting in the way of the ship" is definitely a factor.

That's probably true in a lot of cases. I remember when I was a teenager I didn't ship slash ships, but I do remember hating other female characters for getting in the way of my OTPs.

I agree that the most common reason for hating a female character is that she gets in the way of a slash pairing. However, the way people go about expressing their hatred for said character is often still misogynist as hell.

Not that taking a misogynist attitude towards a fictional character is The Worst Thing Ever and automatically makes you a horrible person. It's not and it doesn't, and people need to get some perspective if they're making those kinds of judgments about another person with so little to go on.

It also happens with yuri and male characters (oh no, het/bi/penis!). Related is the mindset of "the main characters must have declared/made love by the end or else the story is pointless", which is frustrating to find making up the bulk of the comments on a story that purposefully sidesteps it or focuses elsewhere. Sure, it's simple to scroll or back-button out, but it's always a bit deflating when you really want to discuss or read thoughts on the actual storyline.
