Re: Controversial Opinions / Confessions

I find it mildly annoying that body positivity seems to be almost entirely a female-facing endeavor.

(yes, i agree societal standards on appearance and body are much more pressing and fucked-up on women than on men)

I don't really agree? I mean, I more see the double standards going the other way. I more often see fat men being fine with their own body but insisting on only dating skinny women, judging fat women, and then wondering why no "hot" girls are interested in them. Whereas fat women who are body positive I see being generally body positive and not judging fat men.

I've seen fat women who complain about how hot guys won't date them. I've even seen some complain about how they are not catcalled because they are fat and how sizest or whatever that is.

I'm not fat and I complain how hot guys won't date me too. What's your problem?

I don't think I was clear, sorry. I'm not sayongsaying that women are too judgmental or anything like that. What I mean is that the part of it that's about how to be OK with your body seems really centered around women. Which, again, I understand there are good reasons for. I mostly just wish it wasn't quite so pronounced.

Because men don't need encouragement to be ok with their bodies. No-one is shaming them and in fact arrogance about their body is more common among males.

This is such an ignorant comment.

nayrt and I agree with you, but it's factually incorrect to suggest men don't face body image issues, and to a greater and greater degree. We're seeing more and more guys with eating disorders and such, we can't pretend there isn't a problem.

Oh, I agree with that completely. Men do deal with it too. I'm just saying that women are judged more and that a lot of fat men are perfectly comfortable with having a double standard because women are supposed to be hot and they deserve to have a hot girlfriend.

I think Bears likely were there first.

Bears are lovely, but at the same time, I think that's a more specific identity than the general idea of positivity (i could be wrong - please correct me if so). More broadly, I feel like that's a pretty specific subculture and identity in a specific (and specifically queer) space, and it's not one that everyone is in, or should be in, or belongs in.
