Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

This is probably (hopefully really) only limited to where I am, but kids and young teens having really expensive designer purses. My 12 year old cousin got a purse from Marc Jacobs (I think) for Christmas, worth several hundred in dollars. It's becoming quite common and I find it ridiculous.

I don't get the point of designer purses period. It is a purse, not clothes. Then again, I also wouldn't spend 500 dollars on a dress even if I had that kind of money. Designer things are kind of lost on me.

I would never buy a designer purse for a preteen, but I get the point of designer purses.

A purse is something that is highly visible and which you carry with you almost everywhere. Fashion-conscious women (and some men) also recognize designer purses more readily than most other forms of attire. So if ever it was worth spending money for a status symbol, a purse would be the item to do it on.

When I look at a woman's outfit, I most often have no idea where she got her top, or her jeans. I might recognize her shoes and her coat, but I probably wont. However, if she has a Marc Jacob's purse, or a Michael Kors purse, or Coach, or Ralph Lauren, or Dooney and Bourke, or even Calvin Klein - or (eeek!) a Prada or a Louis Vuitton - I'm going to recognize it right away, and it essentially elevates the rest of her style choices.

It's ridiculous, unless you look at fashion as both a hobby people enjoy, and a game with certain guidelines and techniques and ways to play a stronger game.

I'll never forget the story my mom told me of one of her friends with a designer purse who had someone walk by their table and accidentally knock her cup of coffee onto it. $700 down the drain, all thanks to a $2 cup of coffee.

There are some dresses that cost that much -- Kambriel, for instance -- that I'd consider if I were making like six figures. BUT. Those are tailor made to specifications, handmade, with good quality fabric, which is why they are so expensive. I wouldn't consider otherwise.

Christ, that's insane! What planet do you come from?

Norway! Oslo, specifically.

Wow. So... do you live in a really rich area of Oslo?

Or is it just a thing that's trendy now for all the kids to have designer bags?

My mind is boggling.

Nope, though I would wager it is more common on the wealthier part of town. A survey from last summer said 1 in 10 10 year old girls had a designer purse, which I think was a nationwide survey, and I would assume that number is higher the older they get. Really expensive jackets like Canada Goose and Parajumpers are also really common among young people. It probably is a lot more common in Oslo and other cities rather than the countryside though.

My family is not wealthy at all, so the fact that they used the money to buy it for my cousin is boggling to me as well.

I would hope those designer bags come from somewhere like Ross or another discount store that sells factory seconds or last season's bags. That's where I buy my bags and I got my friend's kid a little Betsey Johnson bag for twelve bucks. If not, then that's depressing.

Nope. Full price, or close to it, usually as far as I know.

I don't get giving anything expensive/designer to a kid, period. You just know it's going to get lost, stolen or ruined. It seems like a waste of money. But to be honest, I think designer purses are dumb (and most of them look ugly) so I wouldn't buy one for myself, either.
