I think we had this recently and mine is still the same.

Lone Star State of Mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1YZbyQt1xw It has a great cast and is hilarious. The terrible trailer doesn't help but it is fucking awesome. It gets funnier every time I watch it.

Every time this kind of thing comes up I say Mary and Max. I have no idea why I love this movie so much. It is a stop-motion movie that is NOT for children and all the emotions in it are just so raw that I cry every time.

Omg, I was reading up on this movie the other day. I've been wanting to watch it but I wasn't sure if it still held up.

YES. I was going to make a similar post!

These are technically entries for The Wonderful World of Disney (an anthology series of TV movies, hosted by Michael Eisner, by the time I was watching them in the 80s):

The Richest Cat in the World: A rich old man dies and leaves his estate to his cat. Trouble ensues when the old man's nephew and wife hire a guy to kidnap the cat and the groundskeeper's kids try to rescue him. And the cat can talk. Here's a promo.

Little Spies: A group of kids enlist Mickey Rooney's help to infiltrate a pound and rescue their dog from an evil kennelmaster, and oh my god, the whole thing's on Youtube. I know what I'm watching tonight.

16 Blocks is an action film of sorts about a cop transporting a witness to the courthouse to testify. I say "of sorts" because it subverted a lot of my expectations about how action scenes are written and filmed, and it put a lot more emphasis on character development than I expected. The plot's been done before, but I've never seen it done with quite so much thought and care, and it's elevated by excellent performances all around. (I still use the main villain as inspiration for some of my characters.)

I was just going back through the film pages per year and saw that The Last Airbender and The Sorcerer's Apprentice came out within about two weeks of each other in July 2010.

I have no love for TLA but I really wish more people knew about TSA. It's by DISNEY for crying out loud! It is AMAZING.

Aimee and Jaguar - a lesbian romance in nazi-Berlin between a jewess in hiding and a German housewife. Based on an actual biography. Very German movie but in the good way.

The Banquet - Chinese wuxia movie with zhang ziyi. Also a great adaption of hamlet with some random other Shakespeare thrown in. Stunningly beautiful, tragic, epic soundtrack, beautiful. Beautiful. Also pretty gruesome and also rape is love but it works for the story.

Iron Giant (I mean, it's getting more love but it's still not well known like Disney)

The Losers, Titan A.E., Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Zathura, Dark City, The Fall, Stardust, John Wick (?)

And I'll throw out Epic because I loved it (though it may not deserve it).

I want to say Blade Runner, but there was a time once when that movie was hot shit and hugely influential, so I'm not sure it counts. Seems like very few people ever heard of it, though.

So, more obscure flicks:

Session 9: An asbestos clean-up crew gets a juicy deal to clear out the old Danvers asylum, but with just a skeleton crew and a brutally short timetable tensions are running high.

The Jacket: A soldier returns home from the Gulf War after surviving being shot in the head, but suffers bouts of amnesia. He comes to after one such spell to find that he's been accused of murder, and is sent to a mental hospital -- in which he discovers the ability to time travel.

Trouble Man: A black "fixer" in the early 70s who has the adoration of his neighborhood and the grudging respect of the police finds himself pinned for murder by two gangs, one black and one white, who are both eager to see a potential threat gone.

Deep Cover: A black cop from Cincinnati gets recruited for an undercover drug sting in early 90s Los Angeles.

Videodrome: A sleazy cable TV exec in the early 80s, always looking for the next big thing, happens upon a pirate broadcast that seems to focus on BDSM and snuff porn in a mysterious orange room. His attempts to find the source of the broadcast lead to the dark side of television and its relationship with its audience.

Susperia: An American dance student arrives at a prestigious school in Germany only to find that something is deeply off about the place.

Titan A.E.

I know, I know. This was back around the time when Treasure Planet was dominating fandom, but I always felt that TAE was the better film.

Brother Bear is one of my fave underrated Disney films.

Titan A.E is another animated movie that doesn't get enough love.

Stardust. Oh, god, Robert Deniro. And Megamind. "I'm having an existential discussion with this dead-eyed plastic desk toy." And Stage Beauty. The last man to play a woman on the Restoration stage gets upstaged by his dresser, the first woman to play a woman. Not all that historical, but it's fun.

The Imposters is one of my go-to comedies.

Two out of work actors end up accidently trapped on a cruise liner after a failed con and a bar brawl. Everyone on board is a bit nuts.

In Bruges.

I think this movie works best going in blind. Just know it's rated R for a reason.

Waitress.

Jenna (Keri Russell) works in a diner in a small Southern town and is a genius at creating luscious desserts, but her marriage to an overbearing lout (Jeremy Sisto) makes happiness impossible. When she discovers she is pregnant, she makes plans to skip town before her condition is obvious. However, she begins an affair with the new town doctor (Nathan Fillion), who is the only one who knows her secret.

Big Eden--it's a gay romantic movie and is just sweet as can be. Henry (Ayre Gross)is an artist who ends up having to go back to the small town he grew up in to look after his grandfather. If only all small towns were this nice. ;)

Still Crazy (UK 1998)--Stars Bill Nighy, Jimmy Nail, Billy Connolly. It's about a 70s band that broke up after some major success in the late 70s and they decide to get back together. It's a fun little movie (and no, it's not like Spinal Tap).

Men With Brooms: A Canadian movie about curling (and other stuff) staring Paul Gross (from Due South).

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys. It's not about abuse, it's about being 12 to 13 and getting into adventures with your friends. It's a FUCKING GREAT movie with like a host of young actors who were just on the cusp of being in all your favourite indie shit (like Emile Hirsch, Jena Malone, and Kieran the-superior-Culkin). NO ONE has heard of this movie and it's a fuckin' shame.

One of my all-time favorite movies is Eulogy, which is a dark comedy featuring lesbians, pot-smoking, family dysfunction, Zooy Deschanel as the normal one and an explosion. My favorite quote is "Listen, you shut your spit-cave you foul-mouthed little shit-fucker before I beat the living snot out of you."
