Childhood/teenage favorite fantasy worlds

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, tonight seems like a bit of a mess all over, so let's talk about something fun! When you were a child (or teen, if it was long enough ago for you), what fictional power did you want, or fantasy world did you want to live in? What was that fandom you have that you were just so obsessed with, you spent a lot of time thinking about how you could live there or have that power?

Would you still want it today?

For example, when I was about twelve I was super obsessed with Gundam Wing. I wanted to be the sixth Gundam pilot (got THIS close to posting my most shameless Mary-Sure self insert fic lmao). But as an adult, I'm like nooope. I don't want to be in wars and I hate driving vehicles, being a Gundam pilot would not be fun. And I bet those things are gas guzzlers and who can pay for that shit?

When I was really young I wanted to live in the Pokémon world and if not be a Pokémon trainer then at least have one as a companion, I still like the idea of that now just my choice of Pokémon would be different.

I wanted to be someone that had to die to save a world, because that meant I could save a world in danger. Surprisingly not Jesus-y or martyr-y, for the record. I didn't want to be known or famous or anyone special, I just wanted to save the world.

A lot of my preteen/teen fantasies (partly played out with dolls, mostly imagined/written/drawn) involved characters who could either speak with the dead or go into Death and meet people who had died, usually in order to solve some kind of mystery. And it's not like I was acting out some kind of wish to speak with my dead relatives or anything. I was just a mythology dork and that kind of power interested me. There were lots of rules and rituals about it, and consequences if you broke the rules.

I didn't want the power myself, but I was really interested in it. I guess the same now. The power I'd want now is teleportation. Flying is too much work. BAMF'ing wherever you wanna go, whenever you wanna do it is the way to go. Commutes/errands are super fast. Weekends are unlimited global travel. Hell yeah.

For me, it was Pern and Sailor Moon. I would've loved to have a dragon (sans a few things) and my first Mary Sue was basically a retelling of Menolly's story (only I was clearly more awesome).

I would make up my own magic girl team based really closely on Sailor Moon. I added extra magic girls, and had spreadsheets of names, powers, colors, nicknames, etc. because I was a dork.

As an adult, I think the Pern worldbuilding is still interesting but I am far more aware of the unfortunate parts of McCaffery's writing and worldbuilding. It's easy enough to handwave it or fix it so I still think it's fun to play in her sandbox.

Sailor Moon would be great in that you'd have a core of amazing friends and cool powers. I haven't touched the fandom in years but I'm idly considering buying the rereleased Sailor Moon sets that are coming out.

Mostly, I wish I'd gotten into Tolkien and Narnia sooner. Only touched a bit of Narnia and I liked to imagine myself going through a door to a magical world but it was never actually Narnia (as I hadn't read the book but only saw the BBC movie). And I was never obsessed over it.

I always sort of wanted to be a Borrower and fit into tiny spaces between walls. On the other hand, having to avoid the cat and worry about being Seen would be a big negative.

My biggest childhood fantasy was probably Pokemon. And I am still captivated by the idea - though maybe it's innocent nostalgia talking. I loved the idea of being able to go off on adventures and make a living by befriending magical creatures who could be your friends.

I also wanted to be an Animorph really badly. That'd still be a cool power to have, don't get me wrong. But now if I think about it, I'd be terrified of instantly getting myself killed in animal form. Like I turn into a cat and get hit by a cat, or I turn into a bird and get eaten by a bigger bird... idk.

When I was a kid I wanted to live in either Oz or the Star Wars universe. Now I'd still love to live in Star Wars. Oz seems like it would probably be kind of boring. I wanted to be a Jedi as a kid, and I still think that would be awesome.

Hmm, theoretically being a Jedi seems awesome, unless it turns out that Vader is hunting you down, when it becomes exponentially less awesome.

BUT - my real question: Where do you want to live in the Star Wars universe? Obviously, I want to stay away from all the front lines of the battles; however, that's all we see in the films. I'm fond of Cloud City, myself. Tatooine seems too hot; Hoth (even though it reminds me of home) seems too cold. Where is the place that is just right??? Alderaan was probably a good bet, but that didn't turn out. Maybe Dantooine?

I'm not sure, really? I'm a city girl, So Coruscant actually looks pretty cool. Maybe one of the lower down apartments so I'd still be mostly away from the action. Alderaan and Naboo are both nice, though I'd only want to live on Alderaan in the Prequel area or earlier. I actually like cold, so Hoth wouldn't be completely awful.

A lot of my childhood fantasy worlds were ones I invented myself.

I'm not sure I'd want to live in the world, but the form of sorcery in the Belgriad/Mallorean series sounds good, simply because barring a few rules (like never wishing anything out of existence), it is extremely flexible.

One world/land I'd live in that is not so much childhood/teen for me is Valinor. Despite a few historical bad incidents (most significantly, the Two Trees being killed), it sounds peaceful.

I really wanted to live in the world of Digimon. I wanted a cool pet I could talk to and be one of the chosen kids who gets to save the world. Now . . . I still kinda want a digimon for a companion, but rewatching Digimon made me realize how much collatoral damage these guys caused. Mostly property related, yeah, but someone could get killed during those battles.

For me it was the Black Jewels setting. Yup, still want to, despite all the problematic shit.
