Image: Tojo Nozomi and Koizumi Hanayo from Love Live/µ’s with Nozomi groping Hanayo's breasts.

Text: Nozomi is the prettiest girl in the group imo, and I love how spiritual and motherly she is. She'd be my favourite girl if it weren't for the whole 'sexual assault as a joke' crap. I don't think it's funny at all.

It's okay case, I figured you'd post it on Friday when you didn't post it on the weekend :3 I didn't lose any sleep over it.

Argh, everyone talks about bad yaoi tropes, but there also exists bad yuri tropes - sexual assault, boob grabbing, etc are hilarious and flirtatious. Is this series good besides that? I've never heard of it.

It's actually more of a franchise than an anime/manga series. It started out as a fictional idol group with songs and animated music videos, along with drama CDs, I think? But it has a manga series, two seasons of an anime, and a movie now. I think most people know it because of the app game though.

I think it's a really awesome series, and it's the first anime-thing I've watched in years. The characters are all pretty unique (they don't really entirely break away from the archetype they're supposed to represent, but they're still wonderful), and the songs are really amazing. I actually think this trait of Nozomi's is the worst thing about it, otherwise it's pretty good.

Honestly bad yaoi tropes and bad yuri tropes have a HUGE overlap, and it's because of the same gross assumption that gay relationships are alien and "not real~" or "not important".

-Sexual assault as a joke, yaoi and yuri have this in pretty equal measure, and the perpetrator is either shown as being a lothario (yaoi) or a harmless "female pervert" (yuri).

-Bedroom roles by looks. Tall sporty girl? She's going to be the sexual aggressor, no ifs, ands, or buts! Small, delicate looking guy? Better lube up your butthole boy, or the seme is going in dry!

-Everyone Is Gay

-One or more characters are so sexually compelling that other characters change their orientation for them...

-The usual "I can't be gay!" freak out, done in a way that implies said character finds gay sex and gay people in general disgusting, and you end up wondering how she or he is even going to have a relationship.

I'm missing about 8 million more tropes, but you get the same idea. You really start realizing that it's indicative of some gross cultural views about LGBT people that is warring with the sexual, fetishizing appeal of m/m or f/f relationships (usually for a largely straight audience of men or women).

You are not alone. I really hate this trope.

Damn, everything I know about Love Live comes from months of following Tumblr users who are fans, and I had no idea that was part of Nozomi's character. I'm surprised (yet not), because most of them squee all the time about Nozomi/Eli but they are also very into ranting about sexual harassment and other abusive behavior being portrayed as funny and cute when male characters do it. Sigh.

Nozomi is kind of THE character for the average Tumblr fangirl to project onto so it kind of makes sense that they stan her no matter what.

Oh really? I've never thought about that. In what way is she ideal for them to project onto?

I was hoping no one would ask and we could all just quietly agree because the reasons don't sound great typed out. :')

But you asked nicely so here's my reasoning:

-She's very feminine in presentation (Tumblr hates tomboys lately)
-She easily represents a common female archetype - the mother, with a flavor of Yamato Nadeshiko and Earth Mother. This is good because then any masculine traits she has don't make her a dreaded "typical tomboy" but instead she becomes "subversive."
-It's suggested that she has a wise and/or scheming side to her, and Tumblr loves the idea of feminine women actually being in control of every situation at all times. I know this one sounds really bizarre but I can't count the amount of times I've seen someone try to make the argument that this one Feminine Female character is actually a genius manipulator. It's sort of a glorification of the Feminine Wiles/Femme Fatale trope. It's backwards as fuq but that's for another time.
-She's easily read as gay
-But more than that, her sexuality is only shown through dominating acts, like the boob-grabbing. Her being gay doesn't make her vulnerable or submissive. Tumblr has a big boner for dominant women lately, especially if they're feminine because then it's "subversive."
-She a perv, and every liberal person on the internet right now needs everyone to know how perverted they are too
-The most mature, womanly, least infantalized, etc. What's the average age of a Love Live fan like 31?
-She has a the biggest boobs and is drawn with a noticeably thicker frame than the other girls, making her ripe for chubby headcanons and art, and the kind of projection you'd expect from Tumblr. She also just has a light, bubbly personality, and these characters are always the ones that get drawn as fat. IDK why.

DISCLAMER: (This isn't directed at you badass_tiger just people who might be reading.) I haven't watched Love Live. I really don't want to. But based on what I've seen said about the characters, and the awful fanart, and the kind of people who seem to gravitate toward Nozomi in general, this is the impression I get. If your fandom experiences vastly contradict mine, first of all you're lucky, and second don't yell at me for generalizing this is just what I see everyday. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nah, I think you've got the fandom down. I didn't realise Tumblr would like that she's feminine and 'dominant' at the same time (much as I love this series, I'm really not involved in fandom) since I've mostly seen Tumblr fawn over badass girls more than Yamato Nadeshikos. You're definitely right about Nozomi being a chubby type though. I guess that makes sense.

Personally I like strong feminine characters, and strong tomboys both are good.

I just got out of a screening of Love Live! the movie, which was my first time watching it. I didn't really see Nozomi do anything like this that qualifies as assault in the movie, so how common is it in the series?

Well the picture used in the secret is official art, and she does it about half a dozen times over the course of the anime. She even does it to Maki before they became friends. It is considered just a gag, and she never explicitly does it in the app game, but she has mentioned 'punishing' girls for whatever reason, and the boob grabbing is what she uses that term for.

Tumblr is all over badass feminine girls though, to achieve that you kind of have to build a stereotype - like a Yamato Nadeshiko (because you're right, by themselves YN aren't very popular in western fandoms usually) - and then show her beating someone up or doing something that's considered masculine. Then she's perfect.

Maybe I just hang out in the worst ring of Tumblr Hell possible, but I see this thinking all of the time.

+1, one of my friends is a nozomi stan, she tends to view any moments like these as consenting on both parties and tries to make it cute and shippy.

it makes uncomfortable but i cant discuss our different views with her because she's the type that would say it's lesbophobia, although if this was m/f she would immediately call it out.

either way, im disappointed this attribute was added to nozomi, i'm no longer into love live but i hope the next group, aquors? (if i could recall correctly) doesnt have any characters using any kind of assault as a comedy trope.
